Chapter 5

Maya’s eyes locked onto the familiar floral cover of the leather diary resting in Sarah’s palm. The green bow in her hair felt suddenly too tight, pressing against her scalp as her heart hammered violently against her ribs. She looked at her father, but Julian refused to meet her gaze, staring blankly at the floorboards with his hands clenched into tight fists at his sides.
"I won't touch it," Maya whispered, backing away until her small spine pressed hard against the cold wallpaper of the hallway. "That's Mommy's diary. You stole it, just like you stole her clothes!"
Sarah let out a soft, pitying sigh, her long dark hair shifting over her shoulders as she stepped closer. The intense smell of jasmine perfume felt suffocating now, masking something much darker underneath—something metallic and sharp.
"I didn't steal anything, sweetheart," Sarah murmured, her voice dripping with a sickening sweetness. "Your mother handed it to me herself. Right before she packed her bags and walked out that front door. Read the last page, Maya. It's dated three months ago. The day you won your school spelling bee."
Maya’s breath hitched. Three months ago. That was the exact day her mother had mysteriously vanished, leaving behind only an apologetic note on the kitchen counter. Julian had told everyone that her mother needed space, that she had moved across the country to clear her head.
"Open it," Julian muttered, his voice hollow and broken. He didn't look up. "Just read it, Maya, so we can finally end this nightmare."
With trembling, ice-cold fingers, Maya reached out and took the floral diary from Sarah’s hand. The leather felt cold and damp. She flipped the cover open, the crisp pages rustling loudly in the silent, tense hallway. The familiar handwriting of her mother stared back at her, neat and elegant.
Her eyes scanned the final entry, her lips moving silently as she read the words written in ink.
If anyone is reading this, and Julian has brought her into our home... God help us both. She has been watching us for months. She looks in the windows. She wears my clothes. She wants my life. And Julian... Julian is letting it happen.
Maya’s blood ran completely cold. The room seemed to spin on its axis. She dropped the diary as if it had burst into flames, the small book hitting the hardwood floor with a sharp smack.
"You're lying!" Maya screamed, tears streaming uncontrollably down her cheeks as she pointed frantically at Sarah. "Mommy didn't write this! You forged it! You made this up!"

Sarah didn’t flinch. Instead, she bent down with agonizing slowness, picked up the floral diary, and tucked it back into the pocket of her red pencil skirt.
"Did I?" Sarah whispered, her eyes flashing with a sudden, terrifying malice. "Ask your father where he buried the shovel."
