Chapter 10

The violent explosion of glass rained down like jagged diamonds across the blood-red rosebeds, shattering the suffocating silence of the underground greenhouse. Maya screamed, throwing her arms over her head to shield herself from the falling debris, while Julian instinctively lunged forward, using his broad shoulders to protect his daughter from the sharp shards.
"Get down!" Julian roared, coughing as dust and cold night air rushed into the subterranean chamber.
Sarah stood calmly amid the falling glass, her long dark hair whipping around her face in the sudden wind, her black blouse and red pencil skirt untouched by the chaos. She slowly raised her head, staring up through the shattered glass ceiling at the dark sky above.
Maya lowered her arms, her chest heaving as she looked up through the gaping hole in the greenhouse roof. Standing right at the edge of the broken glass frame, silhouetted against the pale moonlight, was a towering figure wearing a heavy trench coat and a wide-brimmed hat, holding a flashlight that cut a sharp, blinding beam of light directly down into the darkness of the pit.
"Police! Nobody move!" a deep, authoritative voice boomed from above, echoing off the stone walls and rattling the rosebushes. "Julian Vance, you are under arrest for the suspected murder of Elena Vance. Step away from the child immediately!"
Julian’s face drained of every last trace of color. The fight completely left his body, and he slumped forward onto his hands and knees against the cold stone floor, defeated by the inescapable hand of justice. He didn't run. He didn't yell. He just stared blankly at the patent leather shoe half-buried in the soil near the roses.
"It's over, Julian," Sarah whispered, her voice carrying a strange note of finality. She didn't look panicked or surprised by the police arrival; instead, she looked almost relieved, like an actress finishing the final performance of a grueling play.
Maya scrambled backward away from her father, her green school uniform stained with dirt, her braided hair coming undone. She looked up at the beam of light cutting through the dust, feeling a sudden, overwhelming wave of hope mixed with profound trauma.
"Help me!" Maya cried out, waving her small arm frantically toward the figure standing above the shattered glass. "My daddy... my daddy put Mommy in the dirt! Please help me!"
"We're coming down, kiddo. Stay right where you are," the voice from above called back.
A heavy tactical rope dropped swiftly through the shattered ceiling, uncoiling as it hit the dirt floor near the rosebeds. A heavily armed police officer quickly rappelled down into the greenhouse, his boots hitting the stone with a heavy thud, his flashlight instantly training on Julian and Sarah.
More officers poured in from the basement stairwell behind them, their flashlights cutting through the gloom, shouting commands as they swarmed the underground chamber.
Julian offered no resistance as two officers hauled him to his feet, clicking heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists. He didn't look at the police, and he didn't look at Sarah. His glazed eyes locked onto Maya one last time.

"I only wanted to keep us together, Maya," Julian whispered hoarsely as officers dragged him toward the stairs.
Maya didn't answer him. She turned her face away, refusing to look at the man who had destroyed her world. But as police officers moved in to secure Sarah as well, Sarah did something completely unexpected. She didn't put her hands out for the cuffs. Instead, she reached into her pocket, pulled out the luxury watch, and tossed it right onto the soil beside the buried shoe, whispering words that made the lead detective freeze in his tracks.
