Chapter 12

The chaos of the police officers shouting orders and hauling Julian and Sarah up the stone stairwell faded into a dull background hum as Maya stood paralyzed in the center of the underground greenhouse. The artificial amber light from the broken glass ceiling flickered erratically, casting long, writhing shadows across the blood-red rosebeds.
Maya slowly turned around, her small frame trembling violently in her dirt-stained green school uniform. The stone wall behind her was dark and damp, but cutting across the amber glow was a second shadow—a shadow that belonged to neither the police officers, nor Julian, nor Sarah.
"Who's there?" Maya called out, her voice cracking into a frightened whisper that barely traveled across the subterranean chamber.
The shadows against the stone wall shifted and separated. Stepping out from a recessed alcove hidden behind the thickest rosebush was a figure Maya had never expected to see again. It was a woman wearing an identical black long-sleeve blouse and a vibrant red pencil skirt, her long dark hair falling messily over her shoulders. But unlike Sarah, this woman’s face was bruised, pale, and unmistakably real.
"Maya..." the woman breathed, stepping into the dim amber light, tears carving clean tracks through the dirt on her cheeks.
Maya’s breath caught in her throat. Her eyes went wide with shock and disbelief.
"Mommy?" Maya whispered, taking a hesitant step forward, unsure if her eyes were playing cruel tricks on her traumatized mind. "You're... you're alive?"
Elena Vance nodded frantically, stumbling forward through the sharp rosebushes, her hands raw and bleeding. She dropped to her knees right in front of Maya, pulling the little girl into a desperate, crushing embrace that smelled faintly of cedar, earth, and maternal warmth.
"I'm here, baby. I'm so sorry I couldn't save you sooner," Elena sobbed into Maya’s braided hair, holding her tightly as if afraid she would vanish into thin air. "I've been trapped down here for months. Julian locked me away in the old root cellar behind the greenhouse when I tried to leave."
Maya buried her face in her mother’s shoulder, tears of immense relief and lingering terror spilling over her lashes.
"Daddy said... Daddy said you left us," Maya cried, her small hands gripping the fabric of her mother’s black blouse. "He brought that other woman here. He let her wear your clothes!"
Elena stiffened, pulling back slightly to look into her daughter’s eyes. A dark, hardening look crossed Elena’s bruised face—an expression Maya had never seen on her mother before.
"Sarah wasn't just a stranger Julian hired online, Maya," Elena whispered, her voice dropping to a chilling, venomous register. "Sarah is my twin sister. The sister Julian and I tried to keep away from this family because of what she did years ago."
Maya stared at her mother in sheer bewilderment. A twin sister? Sarah and her mother were sisters?
Before Maya could process the shocking revelation, heavy footsteps echoed from the top of the stone stairwell, followed by the sound of Detective Miller’s voice shouting down into the pit.
"Hey! Who's down there? Identify yourself!" Miller called out, his flashlight beam sweeping across the greenhouse floor.

Elena’s eyes widened in sudden, absolute panic. She grabbed Maya’s shoulders tightly, shaking her with a desperate urgency.
"Listen to me, Maya, and listen well," Elena hissed, her face inches from her daughter's. "Do not tell the police I was down here. If they find out I survived, Sarah won't be the only one taking the blame. We have to finish what we started tonight."
