Chapter 14

The sharp, metallic clatter of the flashlight rolling across the stone floor echoed loudly in the sudden darkness of the underground greenhouse. Maya stood frozen, her breath caught in her throat, unable to process the horrific scene unfolding right in front of her.

"Mommy... what did you do?" Maya whimpered, backing away until her small back hit the damp stone wall of the subterranean chamber.

Detective Miller groaned in pain, clutching his bleeding shoulder as he struggled to push himself up from the cold floor. But Elena was already standing over him, her silhouette dark and menacing against the faint amber glow filtering down through the shattered glass ceiling.

"You shouldn't have come down here alone, Detective," Elena said, her voice eerily calm as she kicked Miller’s fallen service weapon away into the thick rosebeds. "Some secrets are meant to stay buried in the dirt. My husband tried to take my life, but he forgot one very important detail: this house belongs to the Vance family, and no outsider is ever going to take it away from us."

Miller gasped for air, his face pale as he pressed his hand hard against his wound. "Backup... they're right outside..." he managed to choke out before losing consciousness against the cold stone.

Maya covered her face with her trembling hands, tears streaming down her cheeks as she realized the horrifying truth. Julian wasn't the only monster in this house. Her mother was just as dangerous, if not more so.

Heavy footsteps thudded against the upper staircase, and a second officer’s voice called down into the pit.

"Miller? Miller, do you copy? What's going on down there?"

Elena didn't panic. She calmly wiped the blade against the fabric of her red pencil skirt, her long dark hair falling over her shoulders like a curtain of shadow. She turned around slowly, her cold, unblinking eyes locking onto Maya.

"Come here, sweet girl," Elena whispered, stepping closer with slow, deliberate strides. "It's time for us to clean up this mess together. Just like we always do."

Maya shook her head frantically, her small sneakers slipping slightly on the damp stone as she tried to find a way to run. But the stone walls surrounded her on all sides, and the only exit led straight past her mother and up into a world that would never believe the truth.

"No! Stay away from me!" Maya screamed, bolting toward the dark corner behind the largest rosebush.

Elena stopped in her tracks, a disturbing smile spreading across her bruised face. She raised her hand, holding the gleaming blade upward as the second police officer’s boots began descending the stone steps into the darkness.

"You can't run from family, Maya," Elena sang out softly into the shadows. "We are all tied together in the dirt."
