Chapter 11

The heavy steel handcuffs clinked sharply as an officer reached for Sarah’s wrists, but Sarah calmly held up her palm, stopping him in his tracks. She didn't look like a suspect cornered by law enforcement; she looked like the director of a grand stage production taking her final bow.
"Save your metal, Officer," Sarah said smoothly, her voice echoing clearly across the damp underground greenhouse. "I'm not running. But before you drag me upstairs, you might want to ask Mr. Vance a very simple question about who I actually am."
Lead Detective Miller stepped forward, shining his heavy flashlight directly into Sarah’s unblinking eyes. His trench coat was dusted with broken glass from the roof above. He frowned, glancing briefly at Julian, who was being held by two officers near the stone stairwell.
"Save the riddles for the interrogation room, ma'am," Detective Miller commanded coldly. "You're an accomplice to a homicide. Put your hands behind your back."
"Accomplice?" Sarah laughed softly, a chilling, melodic sound that sent a shiver down Maya’s spine. She turned her head to look directly at Julian, who was trembling violently under the weight of the cuffs. "Ask him, Detective. Ask him if Elena Vance was ever really my name—or if I was just the ghost he created to replace the woman he buried."
Julian squeezed his eyes shut, his face twisting in absolute agony. He let out a ragged, tortured groan, his knees buckling slightly under him.
"She... she's not Elena," Julian choked out, the confession tearing from his throat like broken glass. "Elena is right there... under the roses. Sarah is... she's nobody. Just someone I met online who knew too much."
Maya gasped, stumbling backward until her back hit the damp stone wall. The green bow fell from her hair, landing softly in the dirt near her feet.
"You're not Mommy's friend?" Maya whispered, staring at Sarah in utter disbelief. "Who are you? Why are you wearing my mommy's clothes?"
Sarah slowly stepped away from the approaching officer, walking over to where Maya stood frozen against the wall. She knelt down, her long dark hair brushing against Maya’s shoulder, smelling sharply of jasmine perfume. She reached out and gently touched Maya’s cheek with a hand that felt shockingly warm.
"I told you the truth from the very beginning, sweetheart," Sarah whispered softly, her eyes filled with a bizarre, unsettling tenderness. "This isn't your house anymore. And that closet upstairs... belongs to me now. Because when your father needed someone to help him bury his sins, I was the only one who answered the ad."
Detective Miller strode forward, grabbing Sarah firmly by the arm and pulling her away from the little girl. He signaled to the officers flanking him.
"Get her out of here. Now," Miller ordered sharply, his face grim as he surveyed the underground rosebeds and the patch of freshly turned soil near the patent leather shoe.

Officers swarmed forward, lifting Sarah by the arms and guiding her toward the stone stairwell. She didn't struggle, nor did she protest. As she ascended the stairs, she looked back over her shoulder, offering Maya a final, enigmatic smile that promised the nightmare was far from over.
Maya stood alone in the center of the subterranean greenhouse, surrounded by blood-red roses and police flashlights. She thought the horror had ended with her father's arrest, but as she looked down at the empty patch of soil where her mother lay, a heavy shadow fell across the room, and a cold voice whispered from the darkness behind her.
