Chapter 8 - The Face Beneath the Hood

The heavy black woolen hood fell back, revealing the sharp, gaunt features of a woman in her late fifties with piercing, ice-blue eyes and a long, jagged scar running down the left side of her weathered cheek. She stared directly at Clara, her gaze locking onto the infant wrapped in the green reindeer onesie with an intensity that made the air in the room feel heavy and electric.
"Margaret," Arthur choked out, his cane clattering against the floor as he stumbled backward, clutching his chest with a look of absolute horror. "My God... Margaret, you died forty years ago. We buried you in the parish cemetery."
The woman let out a dry, chilling laugh that held no humor, only decades of festering bitterness.
"You buried an empty coffin, Arthur," Margaret replied, her voice raspy and biting. "You and your wealthy friends needed to erase a scandal, so you staged an accident, took my newborn child, and left me for dead in a freezing ditch behind the old mill."
David stood frozen, the brass paperweight slipping from his sweaty palm and hitting the floor with a dull thud. He looked from the scarred stranger to his trembling father, his voice barely a whisper.
"Dad... what is she talking about?" David demanded, his chest heaving. "Who is this woman?"
"She is your mother, David," Margaret said softly, taking a slow step forward into the study, ignoring the weapon at her feet. "Or at least, she was before your father ripped you from my arms when you were just three days old."
Clara clutched Toby tighter, tears streaming down her face as she looked at David with shattered trust.
"You told me your parents died in a car crash when you were a teenager," Clara sobbed, her voice trembling violently. "You told me everything about your family was honest!"
"I didn't know!" David cried, pressing his hands against his temples as his world collapsed around him. "I swear to God, Clara, I knew nothing about this! My whole life has been a lie!"
Elena stepped out from the shadows, her calm demeanor contrasting sharply with the chaotic panic filling the room. She reached into her pocket and pulled out a folded piece of yellowed parchment, holding it up toward Margaret.
"The ledger is open, Margaret," Elena said evenly. "The blood debt has been brought to light. But you’re too late to take David back."
Margaret’s ice-blue eyes snapped toward Elena, narrowing with sudden suspicion.

"I didn't come back for David," Margaret sneered, raising a scarred hand to point directly at the baby in Clara’s arms. "I came back for my grandson. The cycle ends tonight."
