Chapter 6 - The Shattered Lullaby

The words hung in the air like a physical blow, heavy and devastating. Clara stumbled backward, colliding hard against the bookshelf, sending a cascade of old paperbacks tumbling to the floor. Toby stirred, letting out a sharp, frightened wail that pierced the tense silence of the study.
"You’re lying!" Clara screamed, her voice cracking as hot tears spilled over her lashes. "He is my son! I carried him for nine months, I felt him kick, I gave birth to him in Memorial Hospital! How dare you walk into my home and spew this psychotic garbage?"
David dropped the manila envelope onto the mahogany desk, his face pale as he grabbed Elena by the shoulders of her deep burgundy blouse.
"What kind of sick game are you playing, Elena?" David roared, shaking her slightly, though she didn't budge an inch. "Clara is my wife! That is our child! If you don't start telling the truth right now, I swear to God I will throw you out into the snow myself."
Elena looked down at David’s hands gripping her blouse, then raised her gaze to meet his furious eyes with chilling composure.
"Ask your father, David," Elena said quietly, her voice cutting through his anger like a scalpel. "Ask Arthur what happened to his firstborn child in the winter of 1968. Ask him why the adoption papers in that ledger bear the exact same birthmark as the little green onesie your son is wearing."
David slowly released his grip, stumbling back as if he had been physically struck. He turned his head, his eyes wide and pleading as he looked at his elderly father standing near the doorway.
"Dad?" David whispered, his voice barely audible. "What is she talking about?"
Arthur looked down at the floor, his face draining of all color as his shoulders slumped beneath the invisible weight of a decades-old secret. He leaned heavily on his cane, unable to meet his son’s searching gaze.
"It’s true, David," Martha sobbed, covering her face with her frail hands. "We tried to keep it buried. We thought the past could stay in the past."
Clara clutched Toby so tightly against her chest that the baby began to scream in earnest.
"You lied to me," Clara whispered, staring at David with a look of utter devastation. "You knew about this? You brought me into a house built on lies?"
"No!" David cried, stepping toward her with his hands raised. "Clara, I swear to you, I knew nothing about any of this! I never saw that ledger in my life!"

Before Clara could reply, the front door downstairs creaked slowly open, followed by the heavy sound of wet boots stepping onto the hardwood floor of the entryway.
