Chapter 2 - Whispers Beneath the Floorboards

The silence that followed Elena’s words was heavy, suffocating, and charged with an electric terror that made the hairs on the back of David’s neck stand straight up. He looked from Elena’s unreadable expression down to the floorboards beneath their feet, his mind racing through every dark corner of the old Victorian house they had inherited just two months ago.
"The basement?" David breathed, his throat suddenly feeling as dry as desert sand. "That’s impossible. The exterior bulkhead doors were bolted from the inside, and the indoor cellar door has been padlocked since we moved in. Nobody could have gotten down there."
"And yet," Elena replied quietly, lifting a slender hand to tuck a stray strand of blonde hair behind her ear, "someone was down there. Someone was bleeding out on the concrete floor right beneath the living room rug. I found the latch open when I came through the back entrance."
Clara rocked Toby faster, her breathing turning shallow and frantic. She looked up at David, her eyes wide with a desperate, furious accusation.
"You told me the house was secure, David," Clara hissed, her voice vibrating with adrenaline. "You swore to me that this neighborhood was safe, that the previous owners left nothing behind. And now you’re telling me a bleeding stranger was living under our feet while I put our son to sleep?"
"I didn't know, Clara! I swear to God I didn't know!" David took a step forward, raising his hands in a defensive gesture. "You have to believe me. I checked every lock when we bought the place."
Arthur slowly rose from the couch, leaning heavily on his wooden cane, his weathered face etched with deep lines of worry.
"David, bring the flashlight from the kitchen," Arthur ordered, his voice carrying the firm authority of a retired police detective. "We need to see what’s down there right now. We cannot wait for the police if someone is hiding in our home."
Elena watched Arthur with a strange, fleeting glint in her eyes that nobody else caught. She reached into her pocket, her fingers brushing against a small, metallic object.

"You can look in the basement all you want, Arthur," Elena said softly, stepping aside to give them a clear view of the cellar door. "You won't find the person who bled on the baby's onesie. They crawled out through the coal chute ten minutes ago."
