Chapter 3 - The Cold Metal Key

David froze mid-stride toward the kitchen, his hand hovering over the edge of the dining table. He spun around, staring at Elena with a look of pure bewilderment that bordered on panic.
"The coal chute? Elena, that’s sealed shut with heavy iron bars and rusted shut from the outside," David argued, his voice rising in pitch. "You couldn't squeeze a stray cat through there, let alone an injured adult human being!"
"Go look for yourself, David," Elena urged, her voice dangerously calm, devoid of any panic. "Or are you afraid of what you might find resting on the cold concrete?"
Clara clutched Toby against her trembling chest, burying her face in the baby’s soft blanket. The green onesie with the white reindeer pattern was stained with a dark, alarming rust-colored patch right where the fabric had pressed against Elena’s hands when she first stepped into the room. Clara’s stomach churned violently as she realized the horrifying implications of Elena’s words.
"You touched him," Clara whispered, her voice cracking as she glared at the woman in the burgundy blouse. "You walked straight over, picked up my baby while he was sleeping, and you got blood all over him before you even said a word to us."
Elena’s expression hardened, her lips pressing into a thin, unforgiving line.
"I saved him, Clara," Elena said coldly, taking another step forward despite David’s warning gesture. "If I hadn't lifted him out of that bassinet the second I walked through the door, the thing dropped from the ceiling vent would have landed squarely on his face."
Grandma Martha gasped, clapping a shaking hand over her mouth while Arthur limped quickly toward the hallway ceiling, staring up at the vintage cast-iron floor vent that connected the upper floor to the dark crawlspace beneath the roof.
"There’s something caught in the slats," Arthur muttered, pointing his cane upward. "A piece of cloth. A shred of dark wool."

David reached up, his fingers trembling as he gripped the decorative iron grate and pulled downward. With a sharp metallic screech, the vent dropped open, and a heavy, silver key fell straight down into the palm of his hand, dripping with fresh, dark blood.
