Chapter 11 - The Basement Bulkhead

The heavy wooden door leading down to the basement creaked open on its rusted hinges, sending a rush of damp, freezing air up into the hallway. A faint, flickering amber glow emanated from the darkness below, casting long, dancing shadows up the staircase like grasping fingers.
Clara backed away from the doorway, clutching Toby tightly against her chest while the baby continued to cry in weak, ragged gasps.
"Shut that door!" Clara shrieked, her voice echoing with mounting hysteria. "There’s someone down there! We heard them earlier!"
David picked up the heavy brass paperweight once more, his knuckles white as he glared down the dark stairwell.
"Stay here with my parents," David instructed Clara, his voice strained with tension. "I’m going down to check the bulkhead. If someone broke into our home, I’m going to end this right now."
"You can't go down there alone, David," Margaret warned, stepping toward the stairs with her scarred face tight with apprehension. "The basement isn't just a cellar. It’s the vault where the original contract was signed in 1902. If you enter without the silver key, the foundation will trap you forever."
David ignored her warning, stepping past Elena into the cold hallway and gripping the wooden handrail. The air grew noticeably colder with every step he took downward, smelling sharply of wet earth, iron, and burning candle wax.
"David, be careful!" Martha cried out from the study, her frail voice cracking with despair as Arthur held her tightly against his side.
David descended the first five steps, the amber glow growing brighter, revealing row after row of old stone wine racks covered in thick cobwebs. In the center of the basement floor, surrounding an old stone hearth, sat a circle of flickering white candles that had not been lit when they moved into the house.
In the center of the candles sat a small, intricately carved wooden bassinet identical to the one upstairs in the nursery.
David froze, his foot hovering over the sixth step. Standing beside the bassinet, draped in a heavy black shawl, was a figure whose face was entirely hidden in shadow, holding a heavy iron hammer used for breaking stone.
"Who are you?" David demanded, raising his voice to cut through the subterranean chill. "Get away from that bassinet!"
The figure slowly turned around, lowering the hammer to reveal a face that made David’s breath catch permanently in his throat.
It was a younger man with dark hair, wearing a dark blue button-down shirt and grey trousers—the exact same clothes David was wearing at that very moment.
The stranger smiled sadly, holding out empty hands.

"You took too long to come down, David," the phantom whispered in David’s own voice. "The second loop has already closed."
