Chapter 10 - The Locked Blizzard

Before anyone could answer Margaret’s chilling demand, a violent gust of wind slammed against the exterior walls of the Victorian house, rattling the windowpanes with terrifying force. The lights flickered twice before dying completely, plunging the study into the dim, eerie glow of the battery-operated Christmas tree lights filtering down the hallway.
David rushed to the study window, shoving the heavy wooden sash upward to peer outside. A blinding wall of swirling white snow and ice slammed into his face, roaring like a freight train. The temperature in the room plummeted within seconds, turning their breath into thick plumes of white vapor.
"The storm blew in off the lake," David shouted over the howling wind, pulling his head back inside and slamming the window shut. "The drifts are already three feet high against the front door. We’re completely snowed in."
"There is no escape from Elm Street during the solstice," Elena stated calmly, standing near the unlit fireplace as if she felt no cold at all. "The roads won't be plowed until morning. We are entirely cut off from the outside world."
Clara pulled Toby closer to her chest, wrapping her own heavy knit sweater around the baby’s shivering body. The infant whimpered softly, his tiny face flushed with a sudden, alarming heat. Clara pressed her palm against Toby’s forehead and gasped in pure panic.
"He’s burning up," Clara cried, looking frantically between David and Margaret. "His skin is boiling! What is happening to him?"
Margaret stepped closer, her expression shifting from bitter malice to a strange, profound sorrow.
"It’s the rejection of the bloodline," Margaret explained softly, her raspy voice carrying a strange authority. "The house is rejecting him because his mother doesn't carry the blood of the covenant. If you don't let me take him to the cellar hearth, the fever will take his life before midnight."
"Don't listen to her!" David yelled, stepping between Margaret and his family. "She’s trying to trick us into handing over our son!"
"Look at his hands, David!" Clara sobbed, pulling back the sleeve of the green onesie.
David gasped. Across Toby’s tiny wrist, a faint, reddish birthmark in the exact shape of a blooming winter cherry blossom was glowing with a pulsing, unnatural crimson light.
Arthur looked at the glowing mark from across the room, his eyes widening in superstitious terror.
"The mark of the blood-bound," Arthur whispered, crossing himself with a shaking hand. "It’s happening just like the ledger predicted."
Elena walked slowly toward the study door, her footsteps echoing in the freezing silence. She paused on the threshold, turning back to look at them all with an unreadable smile.

"The front door is frozen shut," Elena said quietly, her hand resting on the brass doorknob. "But the basement bulkhead just blew open from the inside."
