Chapter 1 - The Blood on the Reindeer Onesie

The living room smelled of pine needles, cinnamon, and the sharp, coppery tang of fresh blood that did not belong to anyone in the room. Clara stared down at the dark green infant onesie patterned with little white reindeer, her hands trembling as the bright crimson stain soaked through the thick knit fabric against her chest. Little Toby whimpered softly in his sleep, completely unaware that the world around him had just shattered into a million jagged pieces. Elena stood just a few feet away, her blonde hair pulled back tightly, wearing her deep burgundy blouse and beige trousers, looking entirely too calm for someone who had just walked into a room of ticking time bombs.
David dropped his coffee mug, the ceramic shattering against the hardwood floor near the decorated Christmas tree, sending dark liquid splashing across his grey trousers.
"What did you do, Elena?" David shouted, his voice cracking with a terrifying mix of disbelief and absolute rage. "Why is there blood on my son?"
Elena didn't blink. She took a slow, measured breath, her eyes locking onto David with a chilling, restrained intensity.
"Lower your voice, David," Elena said, her tone unnervingly flat. "You are scaring the baby, and you are making a scene in front of your parents."
"A scene?" Clara screamed, clutching Toby tighter while hot tears streamed down her pale cheeks. "There is blood all over my child! You walked in here with that look in your eyes, and now my baby is bleeding! Who does this blood belong to, Elena? Whose blood is on my son?"
Grandpa Arthur clutched Grandma Martha’s frail hand so tightly his knuckles turned white, both of them frozen on the floral couch like statues carved out of pure dread.
"Elena, please," Martha whispered, her voice trembling violently. "Tell us this is a sick joke. Tell us you didn't touch the child."
Elena turned her head slowly, looking at the terrified elderly couple before shifting her gaze back to Clara, who was rocking back and forth in sheer panic.

"I didn't hurt him, Clara," Elena whispered, taking one deliberate step closer. "The blood isn't Toby’s. It belongs to the person who was hiding in the basement."
