Chapter 7 - The Ghost Brother

Julian stared at the scarred man standing before him in the torrential rain, the words echoing through his mind like a cruel glitch in reality. Marcus Vance. His older brother, who had supposedly died in a fiery car crash twenty-five years ago when they were just teenagers—an event that had shattered their family and left Julian as the sole heir to the Vance industrial fortune.
"That's impossible," Julian whispered, shaking his head in absolute denial as lightning flashed overhead, casting a harsh, pale light over Marcus's scarred face. "You're dead. I went to your funeral. I saw the casket."
Marcus let out a bitter, raspy laugh, wiping rain from his eyes with a gloved hand. "A closed-casket funeral funded entirely by Eleanor and our dear corporate-backed father. They needed a clean slate, Julian. When I stumbled upon our family's illegal biomedical contracts overseas as a kid, they tried to eliminate me the same way they tried to eliminate Claire. I survived, but I had to stay dead to keep you alive."
Lily stirred in Julian's arms, shivering uncontrollably. "Daddy, it's cold. Who is this man?"
Julian looked down at his daughter, his mind racing through decades of buried memories, corporate cover-ups, and the horrifying realization that his entire life had been built upon a foundation of blood and lies. If Marcus was alive, and Claire had been murdered because she found out the truth, then Eleanor wasn't just a controlling mother-in-law—she was the gatekeeper of a global human trafficking and genetic asset ring operating under the guise of high-society philanthropy.
"If what you're saying is true," Julian said, his voice hard as iron as he looked back at Marcus, "then why are you here now? Why show your face after twenty-five years?"
Marcus stepped closer, his dark trench coat dripping with water. "Because Eleanor just activated the final phase of the protocol. Lily isn't just being hidden in the back of cars for fun, Julian. She possesses a unique genetic marker inherited from Claire's maternal bloodline—a rare cellular code that the syndicate's underground labs in Chicago need for their biological weapons program. That's why your flight tonight was mandatory. They weren't sending you to a corporate meeting; they were luring you out of the country so they could extract Lily directly from your estate without a witness."
A cold sweat broke out across Julian’s back, mixing with the chilling rain. The pieces of the puzzle clicked together with terrifying clarity. The mysterious trips, the wool blankets, the back seat of the car—it was all preparation for a transport run to Chicago.
"We have to get out of here," Marcus urged, grabbing Julian’s arm with a grip of steel. "Eleanor's extraction team is already locking down the perimeter roads. My vehicle is waiting down by the old boathouse."
Before Julian could take a step, the blinding sweep of dual spotlights cut through the darkness across the lawn. A fleet of black armored SUVs surged through the blown-out gates, their heavy tires tearing up the manicured gardens as they surrounded the main house. A metallic voice boomed from a high-powered loudspeaker mounted on the lead vehicle.
