Chapter 11 - The Extraction Under Fire

The static on the radio scanner hissed like an angry snake before cutting off into dead silence. The warning was unmistakable: Eleanor wasn't just planning to recapture Lily; she had authorized lethal force. The entire state infrastructure—or at least the corrupted pockets purchased by her corporate syndicate—was now actively hunting them down.

"They picked up the pulse flare when I accessed the local routing log," Sarah muttered furiously, her fingers flying across the dual keyboards as she deployed a firewall countermeasure. "We've got less than ten minutes before their tactical drones lock onto our thermal signature."

Marcus didn't hesitate. He grabbed the local anesthetic syringe, stepping over to the sofa where Lily sat clutching her woolen blanket. His scarred face softened slightly as he looked down at the terrified eight-year-old girl.

"Hey, Lily-bug," Marcus said softly, using a gentle, soothing tone that surprised Julian. "You're going to feel a little pinch, okay? Just like a mosquito bite. Close your eyes and count to ten with your dad."

Julian knelt beside the sofa, taking Lily’s small hand in his and pressing it against his cheek. "Look at me, sweetheart. Just look at Daddy. Count with me. One... two..."

Lily squeezed her eyes shut, a single tear escaping down her cheek as Marcus administered the local anesthetic near the base of her neck. "Three... four..." she whimpered softly, her voice shaking.

Julian kept his eyes locked on hers, blocking out the sound of Sarah furiously hammering away at her computer terminals as the outside security cameras began flashing amber warnings on the main monitors. Two thermal dots had just appeared on the edge of the tree line, moving fast through the dark woods.

"Got it!" Marcus muttered, using a pair of precision surgical forceps to extract a tiny, metallic cylinder the size of a grain of rice from the incision site. He dropped it instantly into a heavy steel containment cup filled with acid, dissolving the transmitter's internal battery in a sizzling hiss of chemical reaction.

Sarah slammed her hand onto a master switch. "Signal is dead! We just went completely off their radar!"

Before anyone could let out a sigh of relief, a deafening explosion shattered the dead silence of the woods. The heavy oak front door blew inward in a cascade of splintered wood and flying iron shards, hurled by a concussive breaching charge planted on the porch.

"Contact! They're in the house!" Sarah shouted, diving behind the central console and drawing a heavy-duty sidearm from her holster.

"Get down!" Marcus roared, shoving Julian and Lily behind the reinforced stone fireplace just as a hail of automatic gunfire shredded the cabin walls, chewing through books, monitors, and furniture in a devastating storm of lead and splinters.

Julian threw his body entirely over Lily, shielding her with his own flesh as wood chips and drywall rained down upon them. Through the thick cloud of white dust and cordite smoke, three tactical operatives in matte-black armor pushed through the blown-out doorway, their assault rifles raised and sweeping the room with brutal efficiency.
