Chapter 4 - The Thermal Breach

The screech of the thermal torch biting through solid brass sent a cascade of blinding white sparks spitting underneath the gap of the study door. Julian backed away slowly, keeping himself directly between Lily and the entrance. His mind raced through every tactical option available in the house. The panic room was downstairs, now entirely cut off by the armed intruders who had breached the ground floor. The reinforced panic room in this wing of the house was located behind the built-in bookshelves, but the access code had been changed by Eleanor six months ago under the guise of a security system upgrade. Julian had never bothered to memorize the new sequence, trusting his mother-in-law's administrative oversight. It was a fatal mistake born of a blind, misplaced trust.
"Daddy, it's getting hot," Lily whispered, her small hand clutching a discarded book from the floor as she curled into a tight ball against the base of the bookshelf.
Julian knelt beside her, pulling a small silver-plated letter opener from the desk. It was a pathetic weapon against armed mercenaries, but it was all he had. The heavy oak door groaned as the deadbolt finally snapped under the intense heat of the torch, melting away in a shower of liquid metal. The door swung inward with a heavy, ominous thud.
A towering figure stepped through the swirling smoke, dressed head-to-toe in matte-black tactical gear, his face obscured by a reinforced carbon-fiber helmet and a dark ballistic visor. The intruder held an assault rifle with practiced, lethal ease, sweeping the barrel across the room until it locked directly onto Julian.
"Julian Vance," a voice distorted by an internal digital scrambler echoed from behind the mask. "Step away from the child. Hands behind your head. Now."
Julian didn't move an inch. He planted his feet firmly on the Persian rug, his white blazer stained with soot, his jaw set in defiance. "Who sent you? Is it Eleanor? What does she want with my daughter?"
The mercenary didn't answer. He took two slow, measured steps into the room, his boots crunching on fragments of shattered glass. Behind him, a second operative entered, carrying a heavy leather duffel bag.
"We have orders to secure the asset," the second operative stated, his voice equally mechanized. "The principal instructed us to ensure minimal trauma to the girl, but the father is expendable if he resists."
Julian’s eyes darted toward the window. The drop to the terrace below was roughly twenty feet—a dangerous leap, but survivable if they landed right in the thick shrubbery. But Lily couldn't make that jump alone, not while hyperventilating and terrified. He had to buy time. He had to figure out what the "asset" meant and why Eleanor was willing to burn her own family to the ground to keep her secrets buried.
"She's eight years old!" Julian shouted, taking a deliberate step forward to shield Lily completely from their view. "She's a child! What kind of sick game is Eleanor playing? What is down in that facility she keeps taking her to?"

The lead mercenary lowered his rifle slightly, a muffled chuckle escaping his mask. "Facility? You really think Mrs. Kensington runs a simple clinic, Mr. Vance? You built your entire fortune on tech encryption, yet you were too blind to see what was happening right under your own roof. Your late wife didn't die in a car accident, Julian. She tried to pull Lily out of the program. And now, you're about to find out exactly why you were allowed to keep your wealth."
