Chapter 6 - The Shadow in the Rain

The torrential rain lashed against Julian’s face as he stumbled out onto the dark terrace, his breath pluming in the cold night air. The thunderstorm overhead crackled with jagged forks of lightning, illuminating the slick stone balustrade and the empty expanse of the lawn below.
"Lily!" Julian screamed over the roar of the wind, scanning the shadows frantically. "Lily, answer me!"
"Daddy... over here!" a small, frightened voice called out from beneath the stone overhang of the lower patio roof.
Julian vaulted over the railing, dropping heavily onto the wet grass below and sprinting toward the sound. He found Lily huddled inside a stone alcove near the conservatory, shivering violently in her ruined pink floral dress. He scooped her up into his arms, pulling her coatless, trembling body tight against his chest.
"I've got you, sweetheart. I've got you," Julian panted, his eyes darting across the dark gardens. The mansion behind them was mostly dark, save for the emergency red exit lights glowing faintly near the service wing.
Footsteps crunched heavily on the gravel path behind the thick boxwood hedges. Julian froze, holding his breath as he pressed himself flat against the cold stone wall of the conservatory, keeping Lily shielded behind his back.
"Sweep the perimeter," a gruff voice commanded in the darkness. "The asset cannot have gotten far. If Kensington finds out we lost the girl, we're all dead men."
Julian recognized the voice—it wasn't one of Eleanor's tactical thugs. It belonged to someone else, someone operating independently of both Eleanor and his own security team. Whoever they were, they were closing in fast.
"Daddy, I'm scared," Lily whimpered, burying her face in his neck.
"Quiet, baby," Julian whispered, his fingers tracing the cold metal of a garden spade leaning against the greenhouse door. It was crude, but it was a weapon.
Suddenly, a heavy hand clamped down firmly over Julian’s shoulder from behind. Julian spun around with a fierce cry, swinging the garden spade in a wide, lethal arc. The heavy iron blade whistled through the air, but a gloved hand caught the shaft mid-swing with effortless, terrifying strength.
"Easy, Mr. Vance," a low, gravelly voice hissed out of the darkness. "If I wanted you dead, you'd have been bleeding out on that study floor ten minutes ago."
Julian squinted through the driving rain, trying to make out the features of the man standing before him. He wore a dark trench coat, his face partially shadowed by a wide-brimmed hat, but the glint of a silver scar running down his left cheek was unmistakable even in the dim light.
"Who the hell are you?" Julian demanded, keeping Lily tightly secured behind his arm. "Are you with Eleanor?"

The scarred man let out a dry, humorless chuckle. "Eleanor Kensington is a monster, Julian. But she's small-time compared to the syndicate funding her little underground project. My name is Marcus Vance—and for the record, I'm your brother."
