Chapter 5 - The Unspoken Inheritance

The words hung in the suffocating air of the study like a physical blow. Julian felt the room spin on its axis. His late wife, Claire, had died three years ago in what the police reports had officially ruled as a tragic, brake-failure accident on a rainy mountain pass. He had mourned her with a shattered heart, throwing himself into his cybersecurity firm as a coping mechanism while Eleanor graciously stepped in to help raise Lily. Now, standing in the crosshairs of ruthless mercenaries in his own home, the horrifying truth began to coalesce into a terrifying reality. Claire hadn't lost her brakes. She had been murdered because she discovered the dark, insidious purpose behind Eleanor's secret car rides.
"You're lying," Julian choked out, his voice cracking with a sudden, devastating wave of grief and rage. "Claire's death... the police investigated..."
"The police report was written before the ink was even dry, courtesy of Eleanor's board members," the lead mercenary replied coolly, raising his rifle back to eye level. "Now, enough talking. Time's up. Grab the girl."
The second operative dropped the duffel bag and lunged forward around the desk, reaching out with heavy-duty tactical gloves to grab Lily.
"No! Daddy!" Lily screamed, scrambling backward until her spine hit the wooden bookshelf.
Something inside Julian snapped. The restrained, civilized executive vanished, replaced by a desperate, feral father willing to tear the world apart to protect his child. With a furious roar, Julian launched himself at the first operative, driving the silver-plated letter opener straight into the man's exposed shoulder joint. The mercenary grunted in pain, stumbling backward and firing a wild burst into the ceiling that sent plaster raining down in thick white chunks.
"Run, Lily! Out the balcony doors!" Julian screamed, wrestling with the heavy-set operative as they crashed onto the hardwood floor.
Lily didn't hesitate. She scrambled past the wrestling men, throwing herself against the French doors leading out to the second-story terrace. The glass shattered outward as she forced them open, rushing out into the pouring rain.
"Get the girl!" the lead mercenary bellowed, shoving Julian off him with brute force and leveling his rifle right at Julian's chest.
Julian scrambled to his feet, blood dripping from a gash on his forehead, his white blazer ruined beyond recognition. He threw his body in front of the open terrace doors just as the mercenary pulled the trigger, but before the bullet could find its mark, the entire study was plunged into absolute, pitch-black darkness as the mansion's main generator blew with a massive electrical spark.
In the sudden gloom, a gunshot echoed through the hall, followed by a sharp, metallic crash from the terrace outside.

"Clear the balcony!" a new voice shouted from the darkness—a voice that didn't belong to Eleanor's men.
