Chapter 3 - The Perimeter Breach

The receiver in Julian’s hand felt like a block of ice. Before he could fire another word back into the speaker, the line went dead with a harsh, terminal click. Julian stared at the black screen for a fraction of a second before he snapped his head toward the massive floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the sprawling front courtyard of his gated estate. The torrential rain that had begun tapping against the glass just moments ago now seemed entirely insignificant compared to the sudden, blinding flash of hazard lights illuminating the driveway.
"Sir!" one of the guards by the door shouted, his radio crackling to life with a burst of static and frantic voices. "Perimeter breach at the west gate! Multiple unmarked vehicles moving up the drive at high speed!"
Julian didn't hesitate. He dropped his phone onto the mahogany table, shattering a crystal wine glass as it bounced off the edge. He grabbed Lily by the shoulders, lifting her out of the chair and pulling her tightly against his white blazer, ignoring the way her pink floral dress stained against his clothes.
"Martha, get to the panic room in the basement," Julian ordered, his voice iron-clad and absolute, leaving no room for argument. "Take the emergency keys from behind the pantry portrait. Do not come out for anyone, do you hear me? Anyone!"
Martha nodded frantically, her face pale as parchment, and grabbed a handful of her black apron as she bolted toward the service corridor. The two guards drew their sidearms, stepping into defensive positions near the main double doors just as a deafening explosion echoed from the front entrance. The heavy wrought-iron security gates had been blown clear off their hinges.
"Hostiles incoming!" the lead guard yelled, raising his weapon as the sound of screeching tires echoed sharply against the stone portico. "Mr. Vance, get the girl down the hall! Now!"
Julian clutched Lily tightly against his chest, her face buried in his shoulder as she muffled her terrified cries. He sprinted toward the grand staircase, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird. The Chicago flight was a lie; Eleanor’s chilling words echoed endlessly in his mind. The entire trip had been engineered to get him out of the country, leaving Lily vulnerable to whatever sinister operation Eleanor had been running behind his back for years.
As Julian reached the safety of the second-floor landing, a series of rapid-fire gunshots shattered the pristine stained-glass windows of the foyer below. Shards of colored glass rained down like lethal confetti. He ducked into the master study, kicking the heavy oak door shut and sliding the thick deadbolt into place. The room was dark, illuminated only by the intermittent flashes of lightning cutting through the storm outside.
He set Lily down gently behind a massive mahogany executive desk, his hands shaking despite his best efforts to remain steady.
"Stay right here, sweet girl," Julian whispered, brushing a tear from her cheek with a thumb stained with soot and adrenaline. "Daddy is going to keep you safe. No matter what happens."
Lily grabbed the hem of his white blazer, her blue eyes wide with terror. "Daddy, don't leave me. They're coming for us, aren't they? Grandma's bad men are here."

Before Julian could offer a comforting lie, a heavy thud slammed against the outer study door. Someone—or something—was testing the lock with brutal, calculated force. The brass handle rattled violently, turning slowly as a low, mechanical whirring sound echoed from the corridor outside, signaling that someone was deploying a thermal breaching torch to melt the deadbolt away.
