Chapter 2 - The Mother-In-Law's Alibi

Julian’s sudden movement shattered the fragile stillness of the dining room. The two guards near the double doors instinctively shifted their weight, their hands hovering near their jackets, while Martha pressed trembling fingers against her mouth. Julian stared across the table, his chest heaving as the terrifying implications of Lily’s innocent confession began to settle into his consciousness. Eleanor, his late wife’s mother, had been managing Lily’s care schedule during Julian's frequent business trips for the past three years. She was a pillar of high-society philanthropy, a woman revered for her charity work and impeccable reputation. The very idea of Eleanor hiding a frightened child in the back of a car felt like something out of a psychotic thriller, yet the absolute terror radiating from Lily’s tear-filled eyes was unmistakably real.
"Lily, look at me," Julian commanded, his voice dropping an octave as he rounded the table to kneel beside her chair. He gently took her small, trembling hands in his own. "When does Grandma do this? How many times?"
Lily whimpered, pulling her knees up against her chest in the pink floral dress. "Every time you go away for more than one day, Daddy. She tells me we are playing a secret game. She says if I make a sound or sit up, the bad men will find us and take you away forever. So she makes me lie flat on the floor behind the front seats under a heavy wool blanket. It's so dark, and it smells like old gasoline and dust. I hate it, Daddy. I want to tell you, but Grandma said if I told a single soul, you would never come back home."
Julian felt a hot surge of rage mixed with blinding panic tear through his veins. He stood up abruptly, his eyes darting to Martha, who was now clutching her apron with white knuckles, looking utterly terrified.
"Martha," Julian barked, his voice laced with venomous authority. "Did you ever see Eleanor take Lily out alone without me knowing?"
Martha shook her head vigorously, tears pooling in the corners of her aging eyes. "No, Mr. Vance, I swear on my life! Mrs. Kensington always said she was taking Miss Lily to her private piano lessons downtown or to the pediatric dentist. She checked the schedules herself! I had no idea... I swear to God I had no idea!"
Julian didn't wait to hear another word. He pulled his encrypted smartphone from his blazer pocket, his fingers flying across the glass screen to dial Eleanor’s private number. The phone rang once, twice, a sterile digital tone echoing off the high crystal ceiling. On the third ring, a smooth, composed voice answered on the other end, devoid of any warmth.
"Julian? Shouldn't you be boarding your private jet by now? The Chicago board members do not tolerate tardiness."
"Eleanor," Julian snarled, his voice trembling with a lethal fury that made the guards take a half-step forward. "Where are you right now?"
There was a brief, calculated pause on the line before Eleanor replied, her tone turning instantly icy. "I am at my estate, Julian. And I suggest you watch your tone. What on earth has possessed you to call me with such insolence?"
"Don't play games with me," Julian shouted, his eyes locked on Lily, who was now quietly sobbing into her hands. "I know about the back seat, Eleanor. I know what you've been doing to my daughter. Tell me where you have been taking her, or I swear to God I will tear your entire empire to the ground before you can even blink."
Eleanor let out a cold, chilling laugh on the other end of the line, a sound that sent a collective shiver through the room.
May you like
"You fool," Eleanor whispered softly, her voice dripping with venom. "You think you can just cancel the flight and protect her? Open the front gate, Julian. Look outside your window. Your Chicago flight was never the destination. It was the trap."
