Chapter 9: The Perimeter Walk

From her hiding place behind the heavy drapes, Isabella held her breath, pressing herself flat against the cool glass of the floor-to-ceiling window. Through a narrow gap in the fabric, she watched David step into the study, his posture rigid and guarded. He tossed his car keys onto the mahogany desk, walked over to the liquor cabinet, and poured himself a finger of scotch without turning on the overhead lights.
Eleanor followed closely behind, tossing her beige suit jacket over the back of a leather armchair. "Something feels off," Eleanor murmured, her voice carrying a sharp edge of suspicion as she scanned the room. "Did you lock your desk before we left?"
David paused, the crystal glass halfway to his lips. He slowly set the glass down and turned back toward the desk. Isabella’s heart hammered so loudly in her ears that she was certain they could hear it. Every muscle in her body ached from the tension. She felt the heavy leather journal pressing against her ribs, a ticking time bomb hidden beneath her sweater.
David walked over to the desk, his fingers brushing the polished wood. He tested the bottom drawer, finding it securely locked. A tense silence filled the room as he stood motionless, his dark eyes sweeping over the shelves and the shadows cast by the afternoon sun.
"Everything is secure," David said finally, though a frown lingered on his face. "You're being paranoid, Eleanor."
"Caution is the only reason we're still standing at the top," Eleanor replied sharply, walking over to the window.
Isabella squeezed her eyes shut, bracing for the inevitable moment when Eleanor would draw back the drapes. But before Eleanor’s hand could touch the velvet fabric, the sharp chime of a cell phone interrupted the silence. David pulled his phone from his breast pocket, glancing at the screen. His expression instantly hardened into a mask of corporate coldness.

"It's the board," David said, turning toward the door. "We need to take this in the conference room immediately."
Without another word, Eleanor turned away from the window, following her husband out of the study and clicking the door shut behind them. Isabella slumped against the wall, sliding down to the floor as a wave of immense relief washed over her. She had survived the immediate danger, but she knew her window of safety was rapidly shrinking. She clutched the journal tightly against her chest, realizing that the game had shifted from passive survival to an all-out war for control.
