Chapter 6: Shadows Across the Dinner Table

The formal dining room was bathed in the amber glow of a massive crystal chandelier, casting intricate patterns across the polished mahogany table. There was no conversation, only the faint, synchronized clinking of silver cutlery against fine bone china. Isabella sat at the far end of the long table, scrubbed clean of the garden’s mud, wearing a fresh, high-collared dress that concealed the jagged scratches on her collarbones and wrists. Her long brown hair was neatly brushed, falling in smooth waves down her back, erasing any visible trace of the afternoon's grueling labor.

Across from her, David cut a piece of rare steak with clinical precision, his movements measured and controlled. Eleanor sat at the head of the table, delicately sipping a glass of red wine, her eyes fixed on a tablet propped against a silver napkin holder. The digital screen flashed with financial reports and market updates, illuminating her face in a faint, eerie blue light.

"The landscape architect is scheduled for Friday," Eleanor noted without looking up from her screen. "The north corner needs to be completely re-sodded. Make sure there are no depressions left, Isabella."

"Yes, Mother," Isabella replied softly, her voice barely audible above the quiet hum of the central air conditioning.

The euphemism was transparent. Re-sodding the north corner meant burying the remaining evidence deeper, ensuring that no future inspections—whether by municipal authorities or curious neighbors—would ever uncover the true nature of what lay beneath the pristine turf. Isabella stared down at her plate, unable to swallow the food sitting in front of her. Every bite felt like ash in her mouth. The contrast between the luxurious trappings of their wealth and the dark, violent reality of their existence was becoming increasingly unbearable.

David looked up, catching Isabella’s hollow gaze across the table. His expression remained unreadable, a mask of aristocratic indifference. Yet, there was a silent warning in his dark eyes—a reminder that disobedience carried a heavy price, and that the walls of the estate were designed to keep secrets in just as effectively as they kept the outside world out. Isabella forced herself to take a small bite of food, playing her part in the grand charade while her mind raced to find a way to break the cycle of fear and complicity before it consumed her entirely.
