Chapter 4: The Inspection of Guilt

The cold dampness of the garden seeped through the thick layers of mud coating Isabella’s white dress, chilling her skin, yet she felt a feverish heat radiating from her face. David loomed directly over her now, his tall frame casting a long, intimidating shadow that swallowed her whole. He crouched slightly, bringing his face level with hers, though he kept a careful distance to avoid soiling his expensive trousers. The scent of high-end cologne mixed incongruously with the earthy stench of rotting vegetation.
"Dad, you're back early," Isabella whispered, her voice cracking slightly as she tried to force a weak, reassuring smile that failed to reach her terrified eyes.
David did not acknowledge her greeting. Instead, his piercing eyes locked onto her hands, which were resting limply on the edge of the pit. He reached out with gloved precision, gripping her small wrists and pulling her hands up toward the harsh afternoon light. Isabella flinched, a sharp gasp escaping her lips as the pressure aggravated the deep scratches and raw blisters mapping her palms.
The inspection was clinical and devoid of any paternal affection. David turned her hands over, examining the dirt embedded deep within her skin, the torn cuticles, and the dark stains of organic matter that would take days of scrubbing to remove. His jaw tightened further, the muscle ticking rhythmically. To David, those wounds were not a sign of hard work; they were evidence of sloppiness, of a task performed with insufficient discretion.

"Look at this mess, Isabella," David said quietly, his voice dropping into a dangerous, icy register that carried far more menace than a shout. "You were given a simple directive. Contain it, conceal it, forget it. Yet here you are, knee-deep in amateur hour."
From the top of the terrace stairs, Eleanor descended gracefully, her heels clicking against the wooden steps as she joined them in the garden. She moved with predatory grace, stepping carefully around the mud to stand beside her husband. Isabella hung her head, the humiliation burning hotter than the physical pain. She had tried her absolute best, but in a household governed by perfectionism, best was never enough. The trap had sprung, and there was no escape from the relentless scrutiny of her parents.
