Chapter 12: Breach of the Perimeter

The night air was biting, carrying the sharp scent of damp earth and decaying leaves as Isabella sprinted across the dark lawn, keeping low to the ground to avoid the sweep of the security cameras mounted along the eaves of the roof. The muddy trench where she had labored days earlier loomed to her right like a gaping mouth in the darkness, a grim reminder of what she was fleeing from. She forced her eyes away from the spot, channeling every ounce of her nervous energy into pure forward momentum.
Reaching the western perimeter wall, she slipped into the dense shadows of the overgrown boxwood hedges. The brick wall towered nearly ten feet overhead, topped with rusted wrought-iron spikes and a looped ribbon of razor wire. It was designed to keep intruders out, but tonight, it was designed to keep her locked inside.
Isabella searched frantically for the old utility ladder her father had left behind after trimming the high branches last autumn. It was hidden behind a stack of weathered terracotta pots near the garden shed. With straining muscles, she dragged the heavy aluminum ladder across the grass, wincing at every small scrape against the stone patio, praying the sound wouldn't alert the guards on the eastern patrol loop.
Propelling the ladder up against the damp brick wall, she scrambled upward as fast as her trembling limbs would carry her. Her canvas pants snagged on a sharp branch, tearing slightly, but she refused to stop. Reaching the top, she carefully negotiated the razor wire, using her thick canvas jacket as a makeshift shield to protect her skin from the wicked metal barbs.
As she straddled the top of the wall, looking out at the dark, winding suburban road stretching beyond the estate, a sudden floodlight clicked on below her, bathing the entire western garden in a harsh, blinding glare.

"Stop right there, Isabella," a voice boomed from the shadows beneath the trees.
David stepped out from the darkness, his blue suit jacket unbuttoned, his expression twisted into a mask of pure, unadulterated rage. Eleanor stood a few paces behind him, her arms crossed over her chest, watching her daughter's desperate escape attempt with cold, calculating detachment. Isabella had been spotted, and the final confrontation had arrived.
