Chapter 11: The Escape Plan

Isabella moved with cold, calculated precision throughout the darkened estate. The digital clock on her nightstand glowed 2:14 AM. The house was dead silent, save for the distant, rhythmic hum of the security system’s control panel located in the ground-floor utility room. She had spent the last several hours memorizing the patrol schedules of the private security guards stationed outside, mapping out a blind spot near the western perimeter wall where the thick boxwood hedges offered a screen from the motion-activated floodlights.

She dressed in dark, durable clothing—a thick black turtleneck and heavy canvas trousers—discarding the white dress entirely as a symbol of the manipulated innocence she was leaving behind. In her backpack, she packed the leather-bound journal, a small flashlight, and a handful of emergency cash she had managed to siphon from household errands over the past year.

Her hand hovered over the brass doorknob. She knew the risks were astronomical. If she was caught trying to breach the perimeter, David would not hesitate to apply the same protocol described in Eleanor’s journal. There was no turning back.

Opening the door with practiced stealth, she slipped into the corridor. The floorboards beneath her sneakers were mercifully silent. She descended the grand staircase, hugging the shadows of the walnut-paneled walls until she reached the ground floor. The air smelled faintly of polish and old dust.

As she approached the back exit leading toward the western wall, a sudden beam of light cut across the hallway floor. Isabella froze, throwing herself flat behind a large decorative planter. Heavy footsteps echoed down the adjacent corridor. It was one of the security guards on his routine sweep.

Her heart hammered against her ribs, but her mind remained clear and focused. She waited for the precise moment the guard’s footsteps faded around the corner, blending into the ambient noise of the house. Rising silently from the floor, she slipped through the heavy glass french doors leading out into the cold night air, stepping off the manicured patio and directly onto the damp grass of the backyard, ready to face whatever lay beyond the estate walls.
