Chapter 7: Whispers in the Corridor

Midnight settled over the sprawling estate, wrapping the manicured gardens and silent hallways in a blanket of suffocating darkness. Isabella lay awake in her canopy bed, staring up at the intricate plaster moldings on the ceiling. Every creak of the old wooden floorboards sent a jolt of adrenaline through her system. Sleep was a luxury denied to her; the trauma of the mud pit and the constant, hovering presence of her parents haunted her every waking and resting thought.
Quietly, she pushed back the silk duvet and slid her bare feet onto the cold hardwood floor. She needed water, but more than that, she needed to check if David and Eleanor were still awake. Moving with practiced stealth, she cracked open her bedroom door and stepped out into the dimly lit corridor. The ancestral portraits lining the walls seemed to watch her with disapproving eyes, their painted expressions mimicking the cold perfection demanded by the living occupants of the house.
As she crept past her parents’ master suite, she noticed a thin sliver of light spilling out from beneath the heavy mahogany door. Muted voices echoed from within, carrying a tense, urgent whisper. Isabella froze, pressing her back against the cool wallpaper, straining to catch fragments of the conversation.
"—cannot afford another mistake," David’s voice hissed, tight with suppressed fury. "If the authorities trace the acquisition back to our accounts, everything we've built crumbles."

"Relax, David," Eleanor’s voice replied, smooth and dangerously calm. "Isabella handled the bulk of it. She understands the stakes. She is more invested in our survival than anyone else on the outside."
A cold shiver raced down Isabella’s spine. They weren't just protecting a secret; they were treating her complicity as an anchor chaining her to them permanently. By forcing her to bury the evidence, they had ensured that she could never expose them without incriminating herself. The realization struck her with the force of a physical blow—she was not just a neglected daughter performing chores; she was an accomplice bound by blood and dirt. With trembling footsteps, Isabella backed away from the door, retreating into the safety of her room, her mind racing with the terrifying realization that her only path to freedom required outsmarting the two most ruthless people she had ever known.
