By mid-morning, the sprawling suburban estate was surrounded by flashing blue and red emergency lights. Police cruisers lined the pristine gravel driveway, and forensic teams in protective gear swarmed across the meticulously manicured lawns, heading straight for the jagged mud pit in the backyard. David and Eleanor Vance stood handcuffed on the front steps, their designer suits stained with the mud of their unraveling empire, staring blankly into the flashing cameras of local news crews as they were led away into separate police transports. The illusion of perfection had been utterly and permanently demolished.
From the passenger seat of an unmarked police detective car parked safely down the block, Isabella watched the dramatic scene unfold through the tinted glass. She held a warm cup of coffee between her hands, feeling the gentle heat seep into her skin.
