Chapter 9 - The Midnight Boardroom

The mahogany doors of the Sterling & Vance executive boardroom swung open with a heavy, ominous creak. Clara walked down the center aisle, her royal blue satin dress rustling softly against the thick wool carpeting. The room was packed to capacity. Every single member of the board of directors sat around the immense oval table, their faces pale and tense under the harsh glare of the recessed ceiling lights. Whispers died instantly as Clara approached the head of the table, her silver beaded clutch gripped tightly in her left hand.
Marcus walked a step behind her, carrying the manila folder filled with federal indictments and forensic accounting audits.
"Sit down, Clara," said Arthur Vance, the elderly co-founder of the firm and Richard’s former mentor, his voice shaking slightly as he gestured toward the vacant leather chair at the head of the table. "We are... aware of the catastrophic events at the banquet. We are prepared to offer an emergency buyout of your shares to protect the firm’s public reputation."
Clara didn't sit down. She remained standing behind the high-backed leather chair, resting her hands on the polished mahogany wood.
"Protect the firm’s reputation?" Clara repeated, her tone dripping with a quiet, icy sarcasm that made several directors flinch. "You all sat on this board for five years while my father systematically embezzled from charity funds and locked my grandmother away in a private wing. You didn't care about the firm’s reputation; you cared about your quarterly bonuses."
Arthur flushed a deep, mottled red, coughing into a tightly clenched fist as he shifted uncomfortably in his seat.
"That is a dangerous accusation, young lady," Arthur sputtered, attempting to regain a shred of his fading authority. "We had no formal knowledge of Richard’s private misconduct. We are businessmen, not babysitters."
"Ignorance isn't an acceptable defense when federal investigators are reviewing your wire transfer logs," Marcus interjected smoothly, stepping forward to drop a thick stack of printed bank statements directly in front of Arthur. "Every single director in this room received a quarterly dividend kickback from the exact same offshore Cayman Islands account that Richard used to stash Grandma’s stolen assets."
The color drained from the faces of the entire board. Several directors began sweating profusely, pulling at their neckties as if the boardroom air had suddenly turned to poison.
Clara leaned forward, her dark eyes sweeping slowly across the terrified faces of the men and women who had once treated her like an invisible child at family gatherings.
"Here are your choices," Clara said, her voice entirely devoid of fear or hesitation. "Either you vote unanimously right now to dissolve the corrupt partnership, strip Richard of every remaining share, and hand over complete operational control of the foundation to me—or I hand these exact bank statements to the federal prosecutor waiting outside in the hallway."
Silence descended upon the boardroom, so heavy that the hum of the air conditioning unit sounded like a roaring engine.
Arthur Vance stared at the bank statements, his hands trembling violently as he reached for a pen.
"Unanimous," Arthur whispered, his voice cracking with defeat. "We vote... unanimous."
Clara nodded slowly, turning her back on the broken board of directors and walking toward the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the glowing city skyline.
