Chapter 11 - The Ambush in the Garage

The underground parking garage was dim and damp, illuminated only by flickering overhead fluorescent tubes that hummed an irritating, high-pitched tune. Clara stepped out of the elevator behind Marcus, her hand instinctively closing around the hard edges of her silver beaded clutch. A few feet away, leaning against a concrete support pillar, stood a burly man in a dark maintenance uniform. His face was half-shadowed by a baseball cap, but the heavy iron pipe swinging lazily in his right hand gleamed ominously under the harsh light.
"You shouldn't have come down here, little girl," the man grunted, stepping forward and blocking the exit ramp that led directly to the street. "Your father sends his regards. He said some family heirlooms were meant to burn with the house."
Marcus didn't hesitate. He drew his sidearm in a single fluid motion, stepping in front of Clara and leveling the barrel squarely at the intruder's chest.
"Drop the pipe and get on your knees, federal marshal," Marcus commanded, his voice echoing sharply off the concrete walls. "You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit arson and terrorist threats."
The man in the maintenance uniform let out a harsh, barking laugh, his grip tightening around the iron pipe.
"A badge doesn't mean a damn thing when your car tires are already slashed," the man sneered, pointing toward Marcus’s sedan parked ten feet away, its front tires hissing as thick plumes of air escaped the rubber.
Before Marcus could react, a second figure dropped silently from the overhead ventilation duct behind them, landing squarely on Marcus’s shoulders and sending both men crashing hard onto the concrete floor. The sidearm skidded across the slick pavement, sliding under a parked delivery van out of reach.
"Marcus!" Clara screamed, watching the two men grapple violently in the shadows.
The first man lunged forward, grabbing Clara by the arm and wrenching her away from the elevator doors with brutal force.
"Come with me quietly, or the fed gets a fractured skull," the man growled, dragging her toward the darker recesses of the underground garage.
Clara’s heart pounded against her ribs like a trapped bird. Her royal blue satin dress tore at the shoulder as she struggled, her heels scraping against the rough concrete floor. Every instinct screamed at her to fight, but she knew brute strength wasn't going to save her here. Her fingers brushed against the metal clasp of her silver beaded clutch. Inside, her smartphone was still unlocked, displaying the emergency broadcast app she had configured during the car ride over.
With a frantic, desperate movement, Clara jammed her thumb onto the screen inside the clutch, triggering a silent distress beacon directly to the federal marshal tactical headquarters downtown.
The attacker jerked her arm violently, cutting off her motion and snatching the clutch right out of her hand.
"Smart little brat," the man spat, tossing the silver bag onto the hood of a nearby car. "Let's see how smart you are when—"

Suddenly, the blinding flash of multiple high-intensity tactical spotlights pierced the subterranean darkness, accompanied by the deafening roar of sirens echoing down the entry ramp.
