Chapter 6 - The Tablet’s Verdict

The police officer stepped into the amber circle of the stage lights, his heavy boots echoing sharply against the hardwood floor. He held the silver tablet high, its screen glowing with a sharp, high-definition live feed from the grand library of the Sterling estate. On the screen, two uniformed officers could be clearly seen pulling open the intricately carved wooden base of the antique grandfather clock, sliding out a hidden digital storage drive wrapped in protective foil.
Richard stared at the tablet, his knees finally giving out. He caught himself against the edge of the mahogany podium, his breathing coming in shallow, ragged gasps. The black tuxedo that had symbolized his untouchable wealth and power now felt like a straitjacket.
"It’s over, Mr. Sterling," the officer said calmly, his voice projecting into the silent hall without needing a microphone. "We have the original hard drives containing the financial transfers, as well as the security footage from the private medical wing showing unauthorized personnel entering Mrs. Sterling’s room with unprescribed sedatives."
A collective wave of disgust swept through the crowd. Several prominent business partners who had financed Richard’s recent real estate ventures stood up abruptly from their front-row tables, turning their backs on the stage in sheer contempt.
Clara looked down at her father, her expression a mix of profound sorrow and exhausted relief. She closed the lid of her silver beaded clutch with a sharp, definitive click.
"You built an entire empire on lies, Dad," Clara said quietly. "And you were willing to sacrifice your own mother to protect it. But you forgot one simple truth: Grandma was always three steps ahead of you."
Eleanor pressed her back against the floral backdrop, sliding down until she was sitting on the floor among the scattered pearls, clutching her beige satin dress around her knees.
"Arrest him, not me!" Eleanor shrieked, pointing a shaking finger at Richard. "He planned the whole thing! I just signed the paperwork he put in front of me! I didn't know they were sedating her!"
Richard slowly turned his head to look at Eleanor, a dark, venomous sneer twisting his features.
"You signed every single document with a smile on your face, Eleanor, while you spent the stolen dividends on European vacations and designer jewelry," Richard snarled, his voice dripping with venom. "You’re just as guilty as I am. We go down together."
"Mr. Sterling, Ms. Vance, please remain calm and place your hands behind your backs," the police officer instructed, stepping forward and unholstering a pair of gleaming steel handcuffs from his belt.
Clara turned away from the microphone, stepping back from the podium as the heavy silence of the ballroom broke apart into a chaotic storm of flashing camera lights and shouting reporters rushing toward the stage.
She walked toward the stairs, clutching her silver beaded clutch tightly against her side, ready to leave the wreckage behind.

Suddenly, a loud, metallic crash echoed from the back of the ballroom near the main double doors.
