Chapter 2 - The Glint of the Screen

The blue light from the smartphone screen cast an eerie, clinical glow across Clara’s pale face as she lifted the device from the silver beaded clutch. Down in the ballroom audience, the low hum of polite conversation died instantly, replaced by a suffocating silence. Heads turned in unison toward the stage, watching the confrontation unfold under the blazing crystal chandeliers. Richard froze mid-stride, his arm still outstretched toward the microphone cable, his chest heaving beneath his crisp white shirt. The veins in his temples throbbed violently against his graying hair.

"Clara, stop!" Richard hissed, his voice dropping into a desperate, pleading register that contrasted sharply with his towering physical presence. "Whatever you think you have on that phone, it’s out of context. Let’s talk about this in private. In my study. Now."

Clara shook her head slowly, her dark hair brushing the shoulders of her royal blue satin dress. She tapped the screen with a steady index finger, bypassing the security lock with a practiced motion.

"We tried talking in private, Dad. For three years, since Grandma was forced into that sterile nursing facility while her estate was systematically dismantled. You didn't want to talk then. You wanted her silenced."

Eleanor shrank back against the floral backdrop, her beige satin dress catching the stage lights as she trembled. Her manicured nails dug so hard into her multi-strand pearl choker that the silk thread strained against her throat. The central diamond pendant swung wildly, reflecting the panic in her wide, unblinking eyes.

"She’s lying," Eleanor choked out, turning her desperate gaze toward the frozen crowd of investors, family friends, and business associates. "Richard, tell them she’s making this up. It’s a bitter teenager’s rebellion. She’s sick."

"Shut up, Eleanor," Richard muttered through clenched teeth, never breaking eye contact with his daughter. He took a cautious step closer to Clara, his expression shifting from blind panic to a cold, calculating assessment of damage control. "Clara, honey, think about your future. Think about the trust fund, the college placements, the family name. If you press that screen, you burn everything to the ground. Us, you, the foundation. There’s no coming back from this."

Clara let out a short, humorless laugh that held no warmth at all.

"The family name was already burned to ash the day you and Eleanor forged Grandma’s signature on the deed to the Westport estate. I’m just turning on the sprinklers."

Without another word of warning, Clara pressed her thumb against the screen, uploading the master PDF file directly to the high-definition media server linked to the ballroom’s massive presentation system. Above them, the heavy velvet drapes masking the giant projection screen began to slide apart with a low, mechanical whir.
