Chapter 4 - The Document of Betrayal

The brilliant white light of the projector stabilized, casting a crisp, high-resolution image across the massive screen behind the stage. At the very top of the document, printed in bold, unmistakable legal typography, was the official letterhead of the Sterling & Vance Estate Law Firm. Below it sat a scanned copy of Martha Sterling’s final, legally binding Last Will and Testament, signed and notarized just three days before her mysterious stroke in the private wing of the manor.
A murmur of shock rolled through the ballroom like an incoming tide. Prominent lawyers, local politicians, and wealthy socialites craned their necks forward, their eyes scanning the glowing text projected against the wall.
Clara’s voice cut cleanly through the murmuring crowd, amplified by the podium microphone.
"Read section four, everyone. That’s the part where my father and his new wife legally declared my grandmother mentally incompetent, stripped her of her medical proxy, and secretly transferred all her liquid assets into an offshore shell corporation registered in the Cayman Islands."
Richard slammed his fist down onto the side of the podium, rattling the microphone and making the audio feedback shriek with a sharp, painful whine.
"It’s a forged document!" Richard roared, his face turning a deep, mottled crimson as he pointed a shaking finger at his daughter. "She hacked into the firm's database! She used artificial intelligence to fabricate these files out of pure spite because she couldn't accept her grandmother's declining mental state!"
Eleanor scrambled up from the stage floor, her knees stained with dust, her hair coming loose from its elaborate chignon. She grabbed Richard’s arm, her voice a frantic, breathless hiss.
"We need to leave, Richard. Right now. Through the service elevator. Don't listen to her insane ramblings."
"I’m not going anywhere!" Richard yelled back, losing all remaining shreds of his cool corporate persona before the entire social elite of the city. He turned his rage back toward Clara, his eyes wild and bloodshot. "You ungrateful little traitor. After everything I sacrificed to keep this family afloat after your mother died, this is how you repay me?"
"You didn't sacrifice anything, Dad," Clara replied, her voice dropping into a quiet, devastating register that carried effortlessly through the high-end acoustics of the hall. "You liquidated mom’s trust fund to pay off your gambling debts, and when Grandma tried to stop you from doing the same to her estate, you locked her away and drugged her."
The ballroom erupted into chaotic noise. Shouts of outrage, gasps of disbelief, and the rapid clicking of smartphone cameras capturing the unfolding disaster filled the air.

Clara calmly reached into her silver beaded clutch once more, her fingers wrapping around a second, smaller recording device before pulling it free into the light.
