Chapter 5 - The Voice from the Past

The commotion in the ballroom subsided into a tense, breathless quiet as Clara held up a small, vintage microcassette recorder. The silver casing caught the stage lights, looking entirely anachronistic next to the modern smartphone resting on the podium. Richard’s eyes locked onto the device, and all the color drained completely from his face. He staggered backward, his polished leather shoes slipping slightly on the scattered pearls still littering the stage floor.

"Where... where did you find that?" Richard whispered, his voice cracking horribly. "I destroyed every single recorder in her study. I watched them burn."

Clara shook her head, her expression unreadable as she thumbed the power switch on the side of the vintage recorder.

"Grandma knew you were searching her room, Dad. She hid this one inside the lining of her vintage winter coat—the one you donated to the charity thrift shop without checking the pockets."

Clara pressed play.

For a second, there was only the hiss of aged magnetic tape, and then a frail, unmistakable voice filled the cavernous ballroom, projected through the high-end ceiling speakers.

"If you are hearing this tape, Clara, it means your father and Eleanor have finally succeeded in erasing me," Martha Sterling’s voice trembled through the speakers, sharp and clear despite the static. "They think I am losing my mind, but my mind is the only thing they cannot steal. They have forged my signature on the trust transfer documents. If anything happens to me—if I die before my natural time—look inside the hollow base of the grandfather clock in the downstairs library. That is where the unedited security footage is kept."

The tape clicked off. The silence that followed was absolute, heavy, and suffocating.

Eleanor let out a sharp, hysterical sob, her hands flying to cover her face as she backed away from Richard as if he were a stranger.

"You told me the cameras were disabled, Richard!" Eleanor screamed, the veneer of sophistication shattering entirely. "You swore to me there was no physical evidence left in that house!"

Richard didn't answer her. He stood paralyzed, his eyes fixed on Clara, the formidable corporate executive reduced to a cornered animal trapped in the harsh glare of the public eye.

"The library clock, Dad," Clara said softly, her fingers resting lightly on the silver beaded clutch. "The police are already there with a warrant. They should be uploading the video files to the public database right about now."

Before Richard could lunge forward to silence her, a uniformed police officer stepped out from the wings of the stage, holding a silver tablet displaying a live video feed from the manor library.
