Chapter 13 - Into the Inferno

The heat hit Clara like a physical blow the moment she crossed the threshold of the Westport estate’s grand foyer. Thick, choking gray smoke rolled across the ornate plaster ceiling, obscuring the crystal chandeliers that had once mirrored the ballroom’s elegance. Sparks drifted downward like fiery snow, sizzling against the shoulders of her ruined royal blue satin dress. She pulled the hem of her dress upward, tearing a strip of fabric to tie tightly across her nose and mouth as a makeshift filter.
"Clara! Get back here! It's too dangerous!" Marcus shouted, coughing as he followed her through the shattered front doors, his tactical jacket shielding him from falling debris.
"The library is down the east hall!" Clara yelled through her makeshift mask, her voice muffled but terrifyingly resolute. "If we don't grab the master drive now, Grandma’s life work is gone!"
She sprinted down the smoke-choked corridor, her hand tightly gripping her silver beaded clutch against her chest as if the small bag held her very soul. The floorboards beneath her feet groaned ominously, weakened by the water pressure from the fire hoses outside and the licking tongues of fire creeping out from the adjacent parlor.
As they rounded the corner into the grand library, they found the room partially engulfed in flames. A heavy oak bookcase had crashed down across the entrance, blocking the direct path to the antique grandfather clock embedded in the far wall.
"Stand back!" Marcus ordered, rushing forward and throwing his weight against the burning wooden barrier. With a mighty heave, he pushed the smoking bookcase aside, clearing a narrow path to the clock.
Clara didn't hesitate. She scrambled past him, her eyes stinging from the thick smoke as she fell to her knees in front of the grandfather clock. Her fingers trembled violently as she clawed at the intricately carved wooden base, searching for the hidden latch her grandmother had described on the microcassette tape.

The secret compartment sprang open, revealing a heavy fireproof lockbox nestled inside the cavity. Clara reached inside, her fingers wrapping around the cold metal handle of the lockbox, and pulled it free just as a loud, structural crash echoed overhead.
"Clara! Look out!" Marcus yelled, diving forward and tackling her to the floor as a massive chunk of burning timber plummeted from the ceiling, smashing directly onto the spot where she had been kneeling a second earlier.
Sparks showered down around them in a blinding cascade of light and heat. Clara coughed violently, her lungs burning with every breath, but she kept her grip on the heavy lockbox locked firmly in her arms.
"I have it," Clara rasped, her voice barely a whisper as Marcus helped her to her feet. "I have the master drive."
"Move! We have to get out of here right now before the entire east wing collapses!" Marcus shouted, grabbing her arm and guiding her backward through the smoke-filled corridor.

They burst through the shattered front doors of the mansion just as the second-floor roof caved in with a deafening roar, sending a giant pillar of fire shooting twenty feet into the midnight sky.
