Chapter 7 - The Cold Steel of Reality

The cold steel of the handcuffs locked around Julian’s wrists with a definitive, jarring snap. The metal bit sharply into his skin, a stark and brutal contrast to the soft cashmere and bespoke wool he had worn all his life. As the officer guided him toward the exit, the flashbulbs exploded in a blinding frenzy, capturing every humiliating micro-expression of defeat on his face. Julian kept his head down, staring at the polished marble floor as he was led past the stunned faces of his former colleagues, past Arthur Sterling, and straight toward the waiting squad car.
Caroline remained standing by the reception desk, watching the glass doors swing shut behind them. The silence in the lobby felt heavy, thick with the residue of a shattered empire. Elena stood near the exit, her breathing shallow as she clutched her baby tighter, tears finally spilling over her lashes. Caroline turned slowly, her heels clicking softly against the floor as she walked over to the young mother.
"You can stop acting now, Elena," Caroline said quietly, her voice entirely devoid of malice, carrying instead an unsettling, pragmatic calm.
Elena wiped her eyes with the sleeve of her beige trench coat, her trembling hands steadying instantly. She looked up at Caroline, her terrified demeanor vanishing as if it had never existed. "Did the wire transfer clear before the federal freeze hit the primary account?"
Caroline offered a faint, calculated smile, reaching into her dark red dress to retrieve her own smartphone. She tapped the screen twice and held it out for Elena to see. A bank notification flashed green: Deposit confirmed. Five million dollars transferred to offshore holding.
"Every single cent," Caroline replied smoothly. "Just like we agreed when Marcus brought us the initial ledgers three months ago."
Elena let out a long, shuddering breath of genuine relief, adjusting the baby in her arms—a baby that wasn't Julian's at all, but rather the child of Marcus and a surrogate, used as the ultimate Trojan horse in a complex, multi-million-dollar corporate sting. The entire melodrama in the ballroom, the fabricated affair, the forged documents, and the orchestrated public humiliation had been a meticulously executed trap designed to strip Julian of his voting shares and bankrupt his personal accounts legally.
"Where is Marcus now?" Elena asked, glancing nervously toward the flashing police lights outside.

"Heading to a private airstrip in Maine," Caroline said, sliding her phone back into her pocket. "By sunrise, he'll be out of the country with our new identities. But we have one final loose end to tie up right here in the city."
