Chapter 12 - Escape from the Precinct

The commotion in the front lobby created just enough chaos for Elena to slip through the side exit leading into the precinct's secure parking alley. The cold night air hit her face like a physical blow. She pressed her hand against her coat pocket, feeling the cold, hard edge of the matte-black titanium drive resting safely inside. She hurried down the shadowed alleyway, her breathing ragged, until she reached the idling getaway car where Caroline sat behind the wheel with the headlights off.

Elena threw open the passenger door and slid inside, slamming it shut behind her. She pulled the titanium drive out of her coat and tossed it onto the center console.

"Did anyone see you?" Caroline asked, immediately shifting the car into gear and pulling out of the alley without turning on the headlights until they reached the main street.

"Only a rookie, and he was too distracted by Marcus's staged fight to stop me," Elena said, catching her breath as she unclipped the blonde wig and tossed it onto the back seat. "Do you have the decryption keys to unlock the cold storage?"

Caroline reached into her dashboard compartment and pulled out a portable satellite terminal. "Marcus already uploaded the decryption algorithm. All we need to do is connect the hardware drive to the terminal and initiate the transfer protocol."

They drove in silence through the empty grid of downtown Manhattan, the towering skyscrapers blotting out the stars. Within twenty minutes, they pulled into a secluded subterranean parking structure beneath an abandoned warehouse near the East River—the final extraction point Marcus had prepared weeks in advance.

Marcus was already waiting inside the dimly lit warehouse, pacing back and forth beside a folding table outfitted with dual monitors and a satellite uplink. As soon as the car doors opened, he rushed over, his eyes fixed on Elena's hand.

"Did you get it?" Marcus demanded, his voice tight with anxiety.

Elena held up the matte-black titanium drive, dangling it between two fingers. "Locker 404. Clean extraction."

Marcus let out a massive sigh of relief, grabbing the drive and rushing over to the folding table. He plugged the device into a dedicated USB port on the satellite terminal. The monitors flickered instantly, flooding the dark warehouse with the cold blue light of a command-line interface. Lines of code scrolled down the screen at blinding speed as the decryption script bypassed Julian’s multi-layered security protocols.

"We have access," Marcus whispered, a manic grin spreading across his face. "The cold storage wallets are fully open."
