Chapter 2 - Shattered Crystal and Cold Concrete

Arthur Sterling’s voice echoed off the gilded walls of the Grand Astoria ballroom, breaking the heavy silence like a dropped porcelain plate. Julian felt the blood drain entirely from his face, leaving his skin the color of old parchment. He stared at Arthur, then dropped his gaze back to the manila folder resting squarely in front of his black silk lapel. The beige cardboard seemed to radiate heat, burning a hole through the polished mahogany. Caroline remained standing, her posture rigid, her hands flat against the wooden table, anchoring her authority in front of a hundred paralyzed witnesses.

"Arthur, this is a private family misunderstanding," Julian managed to say, his voice strained and unnaturally high. "My wife is under a great deal of stress. We can handle this privately in the suite upstairs."

"Private?" Caroline’s voice cut through his excuse with razor-like precision. She tapped a manicured fingernail against the corner of the financial document protruding from the folder. "Is embezzling corporate research funds to purchase a suburban nursery in Connecticut also a private family matter, Julian? Is hiding a fifteen-month-old child from the board of directors just a slight misunderstanding?"

A collective gasp swept through the banquet hall. Several board members pushed their chairs back, the legs scraping loudly against the parquet floor. Julian’s carefully constructed empire, built over a decade of ruthless ambition and immaculate public relations, began to fracture in real time. He reached out with a trembling hand to snap the manila folder shut, but Caroline intercepted his wrist, her grip surprisingly iron-clad.

"Look at them, Julian," she whispered, nodding toward the photograph of the baby in the car seat. "That child has your eyes. And the corporate account has your signature."

Julian swallowed hard, his throat dry as sandpaper. He knew the media outside the ballroom doors would have alerts pinging on their phones within seconds. A PR disaster of monumental proportions was unfolding, but the financial devastation was only the surface.

"Where did you get these files, Caroline?" Julian whispered, his mask of composure completely disintegrating.

Caroline leaned closer, her breath warm against his ear, delivering a final, devastating blow before he could formulate a defense. "Your beloved accountant confessed everything this afternoon, and he gave me the address of the mother."
