Chapter 4 - Shadows in the Grand Lobby

The mention of the lobby downstairs sent an electric shock through the remaining guests. Arthur Sterling stopped reaching for his coat, his hand freezing mid-air. The ballroom doors, heavy mahogany panels carved with intricate Victorian motifs, suddenly seemed miles away. Julian felt a cold sweat break out along his hairline, dampening his perfectly styled hair. He looked past Caroline, scanning the faces of his colleagues, realizing with terrifying clarity that he had no allies left.

"You brought her here?" Julian asked, his voice barely above a whisper, laced with genuine panic.

"I didn't invite her," Caroline replied calmly, sliding the photograph back into the manila folder with a soft rustle of paper. "She called me this morning after Marcus panicked and warned her that you were planning to cut off their funding. She wanted to know why her monthly allowance bounced. Imagine her surprise when she found out you were throwing a ten-million-dollar anniversary gala with the wife you claimed to have divorced mentally years ago."

Without waiting for Julian’s response, Caroline turned on her heel and began walking toward the grand double doors of the ballroom. The crowd parted instantly, creating a wide crimson path for her dark red dress. Julian hesitated for a fraction of a second, then followed her, his shoes clicking sharply against the floor. He could not afford to let her control the narrative in front of the press gathered outside.

As they approached the exit, the double doors pushed inward. Flashes of light immediately flooded the entryway, accompanied by a cacophony of shouted questions from reporters and cameramen who had breached the outer security perimeter. Standing directly in the center of the flashbulbs, holding a sleeping infant wrapped in a blue cashmere blanket, was a young woman with terrified brown eyes and a simple beige trench coat.

"Julian!" the young woman cried out, her voice trembling as the cameras zoomed in. "Tell them the truth! Tell them what you promised us!"

Julian froze on the threshold, blinded by the strobing lights, trapped between his furious wife, his ruined career, and the mother of his secret child.
