Chapter 5 - Flashes of Exposure

The blinding white light of camera flashes turned the grand lobby into an interrogation room. Reporters surged forward, held back only by a frantic line of hotel security guards whose arms were linked tightly. Julian shielded his eyes with a manicured hand, the black fabric of his tuxedo sleeve catching the harsh glare of a television studio light. The young woman holding the baby—Elena, a former botanical illustrator whom Julian had secretly housed in Connecticut for two years—shivered under the onslaught of media attention.
"Julian, please!" Elena sobbed softly, cradling the infant closer to her chest as a reporter shoved a microphone toward her face. "He threatened to take our son away if I ever spoke to Caroline! He said his money could buy any judge in the state!"
"That is a complete fabrication!" Julian shouted over the din, stepping forward in a desperate attempt to seize control of the narrative. He pointed a rigid finger at Elena. "She is a disturbed stalker who fabricated these documents with Marcus to extort me!"
Caroline stood silently beside him, her expression an impassive mask of cold marble. She crossed her arms, letting Julian dig his own grave with every defensive lie he uttered. She knew what Julian didn't yet realize: Elena had brought her smartphone, and it was currently recording a live-stream broadcast to a legal watchdog channel with over two million followers.
"Liar!" Elena screamed back, her restraint snapping under the pressure. She thrust her phone forward, displaying a text message thread on the glowing screen. "These are your texts from last night, Julian! You told me to pack my bags because the board was investigating your offshore accounts!"
A collective murmur rippled through the gathered crowd of journalists. Microphones shifted focus instantly, zooming in on the glowing screen held up by the terrified young mother. Julian lunged forward to swat the phone away, but a burly security guard stepped directly into his path, blocking him with a stoic expression.
"Mr. Vance, I suggest you step back," the guard warned quietly. "The police have just arrived at the service entrance."
Julian stopped dead in his tracks. Sirens wailed faintly outside, growing louder by the second, cutting through the humid night air. He turned slowly to look at Caroline, whose green eyes shone with a terrifying, absolute triumph.

"You planned this," Julian whispered, his voice devoid of all arrogance. "From the very beginning of the evening."
