Chapter 6 - Sirens in the Night

The wail of police sirens pierced the glass of the grand lobby windows, echoing off the marble floors with metallic harshness. Two uniform officers pushed their way through the perimeter of journalists, their heavy boots thudding rhythmically against the stone. Julian stood paralyzed, watching the flashing red and blue lights paint erratic patterns across the gilded ceiling. His ten-year reign as the golden boy of the corporate world had officially come to an end, reduced to rubble in less than twenty minutes.

"Mr. Julian Vance?" the lead officer asked, stepping directly up to him and resting a hand casually on the holster of his service belt. "We have a warrant for your arrest issued by the federal district court, based on sworn affidavits regarding corporate embezzlement and wire fraud."

"There has been a mistake," Julian said, his voice dropping into a desperate, pleading register that he had never used in public before. He looked around the lobby, searching for a single friendly face among the board members who had trickled out of the ballroom to watch his downfall. Every single gaze was averted. "Arthur, tell them. This is a domestic dispute blown out of proportion."

Arthur Sterling adjusted his silk tie, his face carved from granite. "The corporate audit committee has already reviewed the preliminary ledgers, Julian. The federal marshals are acting on company evidence. We didn't call the police, but we certainly aren't going to stop them."

Caroline stepped forward, her dark red dress catching the crimson reflection of the police cruiser lights outside. She reached into her handbag once more, pulling out a small, heavy silver key ring and dropping it onto the marble reception desk with a sharp, echoing clatter.

"Those are the keys to the penthouse, Julian," Caroline said evenly. "You won't be needing them anymore. The federal asset forfeiture team has already secured the property."

Elena watched the exchange from a few feet away, still rocking the sleeping infant in her arms. The anger in her eyes had melted into a deep, hollow exhaustion. "You ruined my life too, Julian," she whispered, her voice cracking. "You promised we would be a family once your divorce from Caroline was finalized. You lied to both of us."

Julian turned sharply toward Elena, his expression darkening with a flash of his old menace. "Shut up, Elena! You knew exactly what the arrangement was!"

"Mr. Vance, turn around and place your hands behind your back," the officer interrupted firmly, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt. The metallic click of the cuffs opening sounded like a gunshot in the tense silence of the lobby.
