Chapter 11 - The Evidence Locker

The narrow hallway behind the intake desk was lined with grey metal cabinets and buzzing fluorescent tubes that hummed a low, hypnotic frequency. Elena moved with absolute silence, her heels replaced by soft-soled flats. In her hand, she held the forged authorization slip Caroline had just secured from the lawyer. According to the shift schedule she had memorized from Marcus's inside contacts, the primary evidence locker was managed at this hour by a rookie officer currently occupied with a late-night domestic booking.
She slipped past the open door of the records room and stopped in front of locker 404, the temporary holding slot for Julian’s seized belongings. The digital keypad flashed a blue standby light. Elena pulled a small, silver microchip decoder from her pocket—a device Marcus had acquired on the dark web specifically for this operation. She pressed the interface cable against the emergency diagnostic port beneath the keypad.
Bzzzt. The decoder screen flickered green as it brute-forced the four-digit temporary PIN assigned by the intake sergeant.
With a mechanical click, the heavy steel door of locker 404 swung open. Inside sat a small pile of personal items: a gold Rolex, a leather wallet, car keys, and the matte-black titanium hardware drive resting quietly at the bottom of a beige plastic bin. Elena’s heart hammered against her ribs, but her hands remained remarkably steady as she reached inside and lifted the drive.
"Hey! What are you doing in the restricted archive?" a sharp voice barked from the end of the hallway.
Elena froze. She didn't turn around. Instead, she dropped the titanium drive into her pocket, turned calmly to face the guard, and held up the forged authorization slip with a practiced, haughty expression.
"I am Mrs. Vance," Elena said, pitching her voice to match Caroline’s cool, aristocratic cadence. "I was instructed by Lieutenant Miller to retrieve these family trust documents before the federal transfer team arrives."
The guard, a young officer with sleepy eyes, squinted at the paper in the dim light. He looked at Elena’s blonde wig and oversized glasses, hesitation flickering across his face. "That paperwork requires a countersignature from the desk sergeant. You can't just—"
Before he could finish his sentence, a sudden crash echoed from the front lobby—a loud commotion engineered by Marcus, who had staged a fake altercation outside to draw every available officer away from the back halls. The rookie hesitated, torn between investigating the noise and questioning Elena.

"Handle your station first, officer," Elena said smoothly, stepping past him into the shadows of the corridor. "Or you'll have a riot on your hands out front."
