Chapter 9 - The Ultimatum

The red laser sight of the officer’s firearm painted a bright crimson dot squarely against the center of Arthur’s chest. The blinding glare of the patio floodlights made it impossible to see the faces behind the weapons, but the voice that rang out next belonged unmistakably to Thomas.
“Don't do anything stupid, Arthur. The game is over. Just hand the child over and let the professionals handle this,” Thomas called out, his tone dripping with a sickening, manufactured concern that made Arthur’s blood boil.
Arthur raised his hands slowly to shoulder height, keeping his palms open and facing forward. He glanced back over his shoulder. Lily was huddled behind the lilac bush, her small frame shaking violently, her tear-streaked face illuminated by the flashing blue and red emergency lights bleeding through the fence slats. She was holding her stuffed plush bunny up in front of her like a shield, her lips moving in silent, terrified prayers.
“He’s my brother, officer! He’s lying to you!” Arthur shouted back, his voice raw and echoing across the quiet suburban yards. “Check his pockets! He’s working with the woman who kidnapped my daughter!”
The towering police officer with the drawn weapon didn't flinch. He kept his stance wide, his grip steady.
“Sir, keep your hands where I can see them! Take three steps backward away from the fence line right now!” the officer commanded, his voice devoid of emotion, a professional executioner following a script written by someone else.
Thomas stepped forward into the harsh light, flashing a silver badge attached to a leather belt clip—a badge Arthur had never seen before. A federal marshal’s shield. The realization hit Arthur with crushing force. Thomas hadn't just infiltrated their lives; he had used federal jurisdiction to construct an impenetrable legal fortress around Sarah’s lies.
“You’re out of your depth, Arthur,” Thomas said smoothly, walking a few feet closer while keeping his hands safely tucked in his pockets. “You signed the evaluation waivers three months ago during your clinic visit. You legally surrendered your guardianship rights under duress protocols. We’re simply enforcing the court-mandated extraction.”
Arthur stared at his brother in absolute horror. The clinic visit. The routine psychological checkup he had agreed to attend with Sarah to renew his life insurance policy. It had never been about insurance. It had been a legal trap designed to sign away his custody rights without his knowledge.
“You tricked me,” Arthur whispered, the fight suddenly draining out of his limbs, leaving only a cold, hollow despair.
“I protected our family’s interests,” Thomas corrected coldly, nodding to the two tactical officers flanking him on the patio. “Take him down.”
Before the officers could lunge forward, a sudden, high-pitched scream pierced the night air from behind the lilac bush.
