Chapter 10 - The Ambush in the Dark

Arthur whipped his head around, ignoring the officers closing in on his flanks. Emerging from the dense, dark treeline of the municipal park behind the fence wasn't a police reinforcement or another stray neighbor. A heavy, unmarked utility van had silently cut its headlights and rolled up onto the grass path just beyond the property line.
The side sliding door of the van flew open with a sharp screech of metal. Standing in the darkened interior, wearing a tactical vest and holding a heavy-duty encrypted laptop, was a woman whose face Arthur instantly recognized from a framed photograph in Sarah’s old college yearbook album—Elena Vance, Sarah’s estranged sister who was supposed to have cut ties with the family years ago.
“Thomas, you idiot! You triggered the perimeter alarm too early!” Elena shouted across the lawn, her voice carrying a frantic, desperate edge that shattered the calculated composure Thomas had maintained all evening.
Thomas’s calm demeanor vanished instantly. His head snapped toward the van, his eyes widening in sudden, unadulterated panic.
“Elena? What the hell are you doing here? You were supposed to stay out of this!” Thomas roared, abandoning his professional facade and lunging forward toward the fence line.
The tactical police officers on the patio hesitated, caught in a sudden loop of confusion as the chain of command fractured before their eyes. They had been told they were securing a volatile domestic dispute, not stepping into a corporate conspiracy involving federal badges and warring factions of the same corrupt family.
Arthur didn't hesitate. Seizing the momentary lapse in the officers' attention, he dropped to his knees, scrambled backward through the open gate, and scooped Lily up into his arms.
“Hold on tight, sweetie! We’re running!” Arthur yelled over the chaos.
“Daddy! The lady in the van! That’s Aunt Elena!” Lily cried out, recognizing the face from old holiday pictures Sarah had long since tried to burn.
Arthur sprinted through the gap in the fence, diving headfirst into the open side door of the utility van just as a round of gunfire—not from the police, but from Thomas’s own sidearm—shattered the rear window of the vehicle.
Elena slammed her foot down on the gas pedal. The heavy van fishtailed violently on the wet grass, tearing away from the property line and plunging into the dark, winding service roads of the municipal park as the police shouts faded into the distance.
Inside the dimly lit van, Arthur pulled Lily close, checking her over frantically for any injuries. She was trembling, her little white dress stained with dirt and grass, but she was safe. Across from them, Elena slammed her laptop shut, her breathing ragged and panicked as she stared at Arthur with wild, terrified eyes.

“You shouldn't have run, Arthur,” Elena panted, her hands shaking as she pulled a heavy flash drive out of the laptop port. “Because Sarah isn't running away from you. She’s waiting for you at the old family estate—and she brought the original files.”
