Chapter 6 - The Unwelcome Visitor

The sharp chime of the doorbell vibrated through the floorboards, freezing Arthur in his tracks. He stared at the front door, his mind desperately trying to bridge the impossible gap between the man sitting in the black sedan outside and the heavy wooden barrier standing between him and the porch.
“Daddy, don't open it,” Lily pleaded from the hallway, her voice trembling as she buried her face into the soft fur of her stuffed plush bunny.
Arthur didn't move. He kept his eyes locked on the frosted glass panel of the front door. The silhouette outside was tall, broad, and unmistakably familiar. A hand reached out, tapping rhythmically against the wood—three sharp knocks, followed by a pause, then two more. It was a childhood code, a secret signal that only he and his brother Thomas had used growing up whenever they wanted to sneak back inside the house past curfew without waking their parents.
“Arthur? I know you’re in there,” Thomas’s voice drifted through the thick oak, smooth, calm, and entirely devoid of the panic the situation warranted. “Open the door, little brother. We need to talk about what you found in the master bedroom.”
A cold sweat broke out across Arthur’s forehead. Thomas wasn't hundreds of miles away on a corporate retreat. He had been here all along, orchestrating the shadows alongside Sarah.
Arthur took two silent steps toward the door, his hand reaching out to wrap firmly around the cold brass handle. He didn't unlock it, but he could feel the vibrations of Thomas shifting his weight on the porch outside.
“You’re trespassing, Thomas,” Arthur shouted back, his voice deep and dangerous. “Step away from the house right now, or I swear to God I’ll call the police.”
A low, dry chuckle echoed from the porch. “The police are already on their way, Arthur. But they aren't coming to help you. They’re responding to an anonymous tip regarding a volatile father experiencing a severe psychotic break, currently endangering his minor child.”
The words hit Arthur like a physical blow. The psychiatric badge in his pocket suddenly felt like a ticking bomb. It wasn't just a hidden identity; it was part of an elaborate, premeditated trap designed to strip him of his parental rights, lock him away, and hand Lily over to them.
“Why?” Arthur demanded, his voice cracking with raw anguish as he pressed his forehead against the cool wood of the door. “She’s my daughter! What did we ever do to you?”
“It’s not personal, Arthur,” Thomas replied, his tone chillingly casual. “It’s just business. And right now, your daughter holds the key to a very lucrative inheritance that you were foolish enough to try and protect.”

Before Arthur could formulate a response, the piercing wail of police sirens cut through the night air, growing louder with every passing second.
