Chapter 8 - The Breach

The brilliant white beam of a high-intensity police spotlight swept across the grass, turning the dark backyard into a harsh, glaring stage. Arthur ducked low, clutching Lily tightly against his chest as he sprinted toward the wooden privacy fence. The gravel under his shoes crunched loudly in the quiet night, sounding to his panicked ears like breaking glass.

“Daddy, I’m scared!” Lily cried out, burying her face into his dark blue polo shirt, her small hands clutching her stuffed plush bunny so tightly her fingers were cramped.

“Hold on to me, sweetheart, don't look back,” Arthur panted, his lungs burning as the cold air rushed into his throat.

Behind them, the muffled sound of shouting voices echoed from the kitchen.

“Clear the kitchen! Sweep the hallway! Suspect is moving toward the rear perimeter!”

They had breached the house within seconds of his escape. Arthur reached the wooden fence, his heart sinking. A thick chain and heavy-duty padlock secured the gate—a security measure he had installed himself last summer to keep stray animals out of the yard. Now, it was a barrier keeping him locked inside a concrete-and-wood cage.

He set Lily down gently behind a thick overgrown lilac bush, keeping her out of the direct sweep of the spotlight.

“Stay right here, Lily. Close your eyes and count to ten,” he whispered urgently, his hands already searching the ground for a heavy stone or tool.

“Don't leave me, Daddy,” she sobbed, tears streaming down her face again, her little white dress stained with mud from the dash across the lawn.

“I won't. I'm right here,” Arthur lied, his voice breaking.

He spotted a heavy iron gardening spade leaning against the side of the tool shed a few feet away. He lunged for it, grabbing the wooden handle with both hands. Rushing back to the chained gate, he jammed the narrow metal blade into the latch mechanism and threw his entire body weight against it with a guttural roar.

The rusted padlock shrieked in protest, the metal pin shearing off with a sharp clack. The gate swung wide open, revealing the dark, welcoming safety of the wooded municipal park beyond.

Before Arthur could reach down to scoop Lily back into his arms, a blinding flash of light erupted from the kitchen window behind them. A loud, amplified voice boomed directly into the backyard, shaking the leaves on the trees.

“Drop the weapon, Arthur! Put your hands on your head right now or we will open fire!”

Arthur turned slowly, dropping the iron spade. Stepping out onto the back patio, framed by the harsh floodlights, was a towering police officer with a drawn sidearm—and standing right beside him in a civilian windbreaker was Thomas, smiling coldly into the glare of the tactical lights.
