Chapter 7 - The Closing Circle

The wailing sirens echoed down the suburban street, the red and blue flashing lights painting the living room walls in frantic, shifting geometric patterns. Arthur backed away from the front door, his heart pounding a frantic rhythm against his ribs. The trap had sprung, exactly as Thomas and Sarah had planned.
“Daddy, they’re coming,” Lily whimpered, running down the hallway and wrapping her small arms tightly around Arthur’s legs. She buried her face in his gray pants, sobbing softly. Her stuffed plush bunny dropped to the floor, forgotten for a split second before she snatched it back up like a lifeline.
“We’re going to be fine, Lily. I promise you, we are leaving right now,” Arthur said, his voice urgent as he scooped his daughter up into his arms.
He didn't head for the front door. With the police cruisers pulling into the driveway, stepping out the front entrance meant walking directly into the crosshairs of an armed tactical response team primed to see him as a dangerous assailant. He had to find another way out.
Arthur pivoted sharply toward the back of the house, racing down the dim corridor toward the kitchen. The backdoor stood wide open, letting in the damp autumn chill. Beyond the threshold lay the overgrown backyard, bordered by a high wooden privacy fence that separated their property from the dense municipal parkland behind it. It was their only viable escape route.
As he crossed the kitchen, the flashing lights outside illuminated the counter where Sarah’s cream satin blouse still lay draped over the chair. Next to it sat her cell phone, screen illuminated and buzzing furiously. Arthur slowed his pace for a fraction of a second, his eyes catching the caller ID flashing on the display: Unknown Caller - Central Precinct Dispatch.
Sarah hadn't just called the police; she was actively managing the dispatch radio from her burner phone in the black sedan parked down the block. She was feeding the officers false tactical updates in real time, painting him as heavily armed and unstable.
A loud, booming knock rattled the backdoor frame, accompanied by a harsh, amplified voice echoing through a bullhorn from the front yard.
“Arthur Vance! This is the police! Come out with your hands empty and visible immediately!”
Arthur froze, his foot hovering over the threshold. He turned his head toward the front hallway just in time to see heavy boots kicking in the reinforced side door of the garage, sending splinters flying into the drywall. They weren't waiting for him to surrender; they were breaching.

Holding Lily tighter against his chest, Arthur lunged out the back door into the dark yard, sprinting blindly toward the shadows of the fence as a blinding spotlight swept across the lawn.
