Chapter 14 - The Final Truth

The fire raced up the vintage wallpaper with terrifying speed, devouring decades of dry dust and timber in a roaring wall of flame and black smoke. The nursery filled with a choking haze that made it difficult to breathe or see.
“Elena! Get out!” Arthur shouted, coughing violently as he shielded Lily’s face with his dark blue polo shirt.
Thomas scrambled to his feet, shoving Elena hard against the crumbling plaster before bolting toward the hallway exit. Sarah didn't run. She stood calmly beside the spreading fire, her eyes locked on Arthur with a strange, haunting expression of finality as she clutched a single unburned manila envelope to her chest.
“You can’t burn the truth, Arthur!” Sarah yelled over the roar of the flames. “The legal papers are already uploaded to the federal server! Even if we die here, your life is over!”
Arthur didn't care about the legal papers anymore. The only thing that mattered was getting Lily out of the burning inferno alive. He turned his back on Sarah, charging through the thick smoke toward the hallway where Elena was already dragging herself up from the floor.
“The back stairwell! It’s clear!” Elena coughed, pointing frantically down the corridor away from the collapsing main staircase.
Arthur followed her blindly, the heat from the blazing nursery pressing hot against his back. As they reached the service stairwell, a heavy wooden beam from the ceiling collapsed with a deafening crash, blocking the main hallway and trapping Sarah on the other side of the wall of fire. She didn't scream; she simply watched them disappear into the smoke, her expression completely unreadable as the flames swallowed her whole.
They burst out through the rotting back exit of the Cape estate just as the front facade collapsed inward with a thunderous roar. The cool ocean air hit their faces like a splash of ice water. Arthur collapsed onto the damp grass, setting Lily down gently on the lawn.
The little girl opened her eyes, blinking against the smoke, and looked up at her father. Her small white dress was torn and stained with soot, but she was smiling faintly.
“We made it, Daddy,” Lily whispered, holding up her stuffed plush bunny, whose pink ribbon was now slightly singed but intact.
Arthur pulled her into a fierce, tearful embrace, burying his face in her short blonde bob. Elena stood nearby, leaning against the side of the utility van, staring out at the burning ruins of the estate as the distant wail of emergency sirens finally began to echo through the coastal night.
The nightmare was over, but the scars would last a lifetime.
Or so Arthur thought, until Elena dropped the manila envelope she had managed to snatch from the burning table right into his lap.

Arthur opened the flap, pulled out the remaining unburned documents, and froze in absolute horror at the very last page.
