Chapter 2 - Shadows in the Hallway

Arthur’s breath caught in his throat. The cold dread pooling in his stomach threatened to suffocate him. He looked down at Lily, whose tear-stained cheeks and wide, frightened eyes held a maturity no four-year-old should ever possess. Her small white dress with its pink ribbon trim seemed far too fragile for the dark reality closing in around them.

“What do you mean, sweetie?” Arthur managed to choke out, his voice cracking with a mixture of terror and fierce paternal instinct. He dropped to his knees, ignoring the throbbing pain in his joints, desperate to pull his daughter close.

“Just look, Daddy,” Lily whispered again, her small hand clutching the worn fabric of her stuffed plush bunny so tightly her knuckles turned white. She didn't want a hug; she wanted him to act.

The cream satin blouse he had seen just minutes ago was now draped carelessly over a kitchen chair, completely empty. The backdoor stood slightly ajar, letting in a chilling autumn breeze that rustled the sheer curtains. She had fled into the night, realizing the security system had betrayed her carefully constructed web of lies. But she had left something behind, or worse, she had left something waiting for them in the nursery.

With heavy, agonizing steps, Arthur walked past the dining table where the bitter argument had just taken place. Every creak of the hardwood floor sounded like a gunshot in the quiet house. He reached the end of the hallway where Lily’s bedroom door stood closed. A thin sliver of unnatural, flickering red light leaked from underneath the wooden threshold. It wasn't the warm nightlight he had installed last week.

His hand trembled as he reached out, his fingers brushing against the cold brass doorknob. He paused, listening intently. From inside the room came a faint, rhythmic scratching sound, accompanied by a soft, metallic clicking noise that made the hairs on the back of his neck stand straight up. He swallowed hard, turned the knob, and pushed the door open.
