Chapter 9: Discharged and Determined

The hospital discharge process took longer than expected, filled with tedious paperwork, prescription sign-offs for prenatal vitamins, and final instructions from Dr. Evans about rest and warning signs. Leo handled all of it with a calm, methodical efficiency that impressed the nursing staff. When Maya walked out of the hospital sliding doors in her beige dress, leaning slightly on Leo’s arm for support, the afternoon sun felt warm and hopeful. The bruises on her shoulder were hidden beneath a light cardigan she had brought along, but the emotional armor she wore was visibly thicker. She was ready to reclaim her life.

The drive back to the house was quiet, filled with the gentle hum of the car engine and the rhythmic flashing of passing streetlights. Neither of them spoke of Derek during the ride; his name had become an unnecessary shadow neither wanted to invite into the car. When Leo pulled into the driveway, Maya looked at the small rental house with fresh eyes. "Did you... change the locks?" she asked softly, noticing the gleaming new brass hardware on the front door as they approached. Leo unlocked it smoothly, pushing the door open to reveal a clean, quiet hallway where the broken bottles were entirely gone.

"First thing I did this morning," Leo answered, holding the door for her. Buster trotted down the hall, his tail wagging gently as he approached Maya with extreme care, as if he understood she was fragile. Maya dropped to her knees, burying her face in the Rottweiler’s thick fur as a fresh wave of emotion washed over her. Buster licked her cheek gently, letting out a low, comforting rumble. Leo stood in the doorway, watching the scene with a quiet sense of satisfaction. They were battered, bruised, and facing an uncertain financial future, but for the first time in a very long time, they were safe in their own home.
