Chapter 12: A Temporary Shelter

The police report was filed quickly, and the responding officers gave Derek a formal trespass warning, making it clear that any further attempts to approach the house or contact Maya would result in immediate arrest. The incident left Maya shaken for the rest of the day, but Buster’s unwavering vigilance provided a tangible sense of security that helped ease her nerves. When Leo came home from the auto shop that evening, he brought home takeout food and a small baby mobile he had picked up from a secondhand store—a simple array of painted wooden stars and moons that needed a little dusting off.

"We need to start setting up the nursery this weekend," Leo announced as they sat at the kitchen table eating dinner. Maya smiled, a genuine, warm expression that hadn't graced her face in months. "I’d love that. The small spare room by the back would be perfect," she agreed. For the next three days, the house buzzed with constructive energy. Leo painted the spare room a soft, soothing shade of pale yellow, while Maya organized baby clothes and washed tiny cotton blankets. Every stroke of the paintbrush and every folded onesie felt like a brick in a newly constructed fortress of hope and safety.

They weren't wealthy, and the challenges ahead were immense, but the toxic cloud of Derek’s volatility had lifted, leaving behind a clear horizon. One evening, as Leo stood in the newly painted nursery assembling a wooden crib with a set of Allen wrenches, Maya walked in and leaned against the doorframe, watching him work with quiet admiration. "You know, Leo, you didn't have to stay. You could have walked away too," she said softly. Leo paused, wiping sweat from his forehead with the back of his tattooed arm, and looked up at her with clear, steady eyes. "Where would I go? This is my family too. We protect our own."
