Chapter 13: The Unraveling

While Maya and Leo built a peaceful rhythm inside the house, Derek’s life was rapidly spiraling out of control. Stripped of his living arrangement, his access to Maya’s financial stability, and his comfort zone, Derek had burned through his remaining cash on cheap alcohol and motel rooms. His former friends at local bars had grown tired of his erratic outbursts and constant whining, eventually cutting him off entirely. Standing outside a convenience store late one rainy night, shivering in his black t-shirt and shorts with no jacket to protect against the chilly wind, Derek realized the magnitude of what he had thrown away.
His anger had always been his shield, but now it was a cage that had locked him out of everything that mattered. He pulled out his cracked smartphone, staring at a photo of Maya he had saved from months ago—smiling before the constant stress took its toll. A bitter wave of self-pity washed over him, quickly followed by a dangerous spark of resentment. Instead of recognizing his own destructive behavior, Derek’s distorted mind began to blame Leo, convincing himself that his younger brother had deliberately orchestrated his exile to steal his life away.
Desperate and irrational, Derek decided to make one final, reckless move. He didn't care about the police warning or the trespass order. He needed his tools, he needed money, and above all, he needed to prove he was still in control. In the pre-dawn hours of a foggy Tuesday morning, Derek drove his beat-up sedan without headlights down their suburban street, parking two blocks away to avoid drawing attention. He crept down the alleyway behind the house, clutching a heavy iron crowbar he had found in the trunk of his car, intending to force the back kitchen window open and demand what he believed was rightfully his.
